Pilates was formed by Joseph Pilates during
The First World War with the proposal to improve
the rehabilitation programme for the many
returning veterans. Joseph Pilates believed mental
and physical health are essential to one another. He
recommended a few precise movements
emphasising control and form to aid injured
veterans in regaining their health by strengthening,
stretching and stabilising key muscles.
Pilates created The Pilates Principles to
condition the entire body: proper alignment,
centering, concentration, control, precision,
breathing and flowing movement.
Pilates claimed his method has a philosophical
and theoretical foundation. It claims not merely to
be a collection of exercises but a method developed
and refined over more than eighty years of use and
observation.

VIII. Read the following passage about Shawn Ellis and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet
to indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions.
THE MAN WHO LIVES WITH WOLVES
As a child, Shaun Ellis was no different from his peers as far as wolves were concerned: his only
acquaintance with them was through the classic fairy tales in which they were always trying to gobble up the
defenceless hero or heroine. It was only when he first encountered them in a zoo that he realized how little
resemblance these animals bore to the mythical creatures of stories and movies.
Raised in the small English village, Ellis was always fascinated by the natural world and its animals,
and he knew he would one day work in the wild. Later, in his 20, he came across a help wanted ad from an
American naturalist named Levi Holt, who ran a wolf research center in Idaho, USA. On the spot, he
decided what he wanted to do with his life and sold the few meagre belongings he had to raise enough
money for his plan fare. At the center, he met up with biologists working on the reservation, who took him
on as a field biologist, training him how to track wolves and collect data on them. But this work only served
to arouse his curiosity about how he could get closer to the wolves and learn more about their behaviour. He
became obsessed with the thought of becoming part of their pack and living amongst them. [A]
After a couple of years working as a field biologist at the center, Ellis had become intimately
acquainted with the rugged mountainous terrain of region, which imbued the confidence to take the leap and
move into the wild. He soon managed to approach the wolves, but kept a healthy distance from them. [B] He
confined himself to their den area, a remote spot where the female wolves looked after their young, and after
week of assisting them vigilantly, he earned the trust of the pack. However, being accepted required Ellis to
live as the wolves did, eating raw deer and wild fruit. In retrospect, he admits that the food was pretty
terrible, but as he says, When you havent eaten for a week, anything can be appetizing. Perhaps what
was most remarkable was how his body adapted to his new diet. He never fell ill and was generally in good
physical condition.
What Ellis recalls most vividly is the tremendous sense of belonging he felt with the wolves. Although
he had no human contact, he had arranged a rendezvous point where he could leave messages if he ever felt
the need for assistance. [C] He claim to have feared for his life on only one occasion, when he ate the wrong
piece of meat, going against a strict hierarchy of who eats what part of a hunted animal. One of the wolves
leapt at knocked him to the ground, and bit down on his face. It was at this moment that Ellis became
acutely aware of how vulnerable he really was and how much restraint the wolves generally treated him
with.
After a year, Ellis realized he had to return to civilization, since life expectancy is generally short in
the wild. He experienced a terrible culture shock at first, but eventually adjusted and he now runs a center in
Devon that helps wild and captive wolves. [D] A remarkable man, Shawn Ellis has made it his mission to
erase widely-held misconceptions about what he considers to be one of the noblest creatures on the planet.
