Well Control - Introductory

WELL CONTROL EQUIPMENT COURSE (WCEC) FOR FLOATING RIGS

Introduction
The Well Control Equipment Course (WCEC) has been specially developed for drilling personnel who wish to gain basic
overall skills in well control on floating drilling rigs. This course can be considered as an introduction to the ModuSpec
Academy Well Control educational curriculum.

Who should attend?

This course is intended for personnel involved in drilling operations and working with well control equipment on floating rigs
who want to improve their knowledge of well control and subsea-engineering related equipment:
 Rig Managers
 Drilling Supervisors
 Toolpushers
 Drillers
 Experienced Assistant Subsea Engineers
 Subsea Engineers
 Senior Subsea Engineers

Aims
Upon completion of this 5-day course the candidate will be able to:
Describe and explain the working of floaters' main well control equipment:
 ram type BOPs
 shear ram calculations
 annular-type BOPs
 BOP installed gate valves
 hydraulic connectors
 choke and kill manifold
 BOP HPU
 conventional BOP control systems
 multiplex BOP control systems
 diverter systems
 well control equipment mathematics
 Perform basic subsea mathematical calculations
Describe and explain the working of the conventional hydraulic and modern deep water multiplex control systems
Calculate the usable volume of accumulators, both surface and subsea
Calculate riser space-outs, perform riser tensioner calculations and drill pipe space-outs compressibility calculations
Test BOPs, both surface and subsea
 Test choke and kill manifolds
 Perform poorboy degasser calculations
Explain the implication of standards (API, ASME, etc.) on maintenance, inspection, function and pressure testing of well

control equipment
Recognize recurring problems with the well control equipment of the subsea department
