6 Theory of Machines

This document discusses governors and their function of regulating engine speed by adjusting fuel supply based on load requirements. It classifies governors into centrifugal and inertia types. Centrifugal governors have flyballs attached to arms connected to a spindle that can open and close a throttle valve via a sleeve to regulate fuel supply. The purpose is to maintain engine speed close to the mean speed under varying loads.

Governors
OBJECTIVES:

Date:

After studying & solving this exercise, students will be able to:
Understand the function of governors.
Classify governors
Differentiate between flywheel and governors.
7.1. Governors:
When the load on an engine increases or decreases, engine speed decreases or increases. When the load
increases, engine speed decreases. When the load decreases, engine speed increases. Such variation of high
and low speed is not accepted. So the supply of fuel has to be increased or decreased according to the
requirement. The function of the governor is to adjust the supply of fuel according to the load
requirements so as to keep the speeds as close to the mean speed as possible at various, loads.
Governors are classified as
1. Centrifugal governor 2. Inertia governors
7.2. Centrifugal governors:

Q.1 Differentiate Governor from flywheel.

Q.2 Classify Governors.
Q.3 Match A with B.
A
B
Flyballs
It is driven by the engine through bevel gears. It rotates and because of this balls rotate.
Arms
It is attached at one end to spindle and at other end it carries two balls.
Spindle
They limit the travel of the sleeve in upward and downward directions.
Sleeve
Supply of working fluid can be increased or decreased by opening or closing of this
part.
Stops
It revolves with the spindle but can slide up & down.
Throttle Valve These two balls of equal mass are attached to the arms of the centrifugal governor.

Q.4 Draw a neat sketch of Centrifugal Governors.

Q.5 Figure (a) and (b) below shows different types of governors. Name both the governors. Distinguish
between both the types of governors.

Q .6. Draw neat sketch of a Harntell Govenor.
