Module in Free Fall

This document provides information about factors that affect objects in free fall, disregarding air resistance. It explains that the velocity of a falling object depends on the acceleration due to gravity, the time of fall, and the distance fallen. The document includes a 10 question pre-test about free fall scenarios. It then gives the formulas for calculating the final velocity and distance of a falling object based on its initial velocity and gravity. An example problem applies the formulas to find the time and final velocity of a stone dropped from a 100m cliff. A post-test problem is also included.

Module in free fall

I.

Objective
To know factors affected by a free falling body, disregarding air resistance

II.

Directions
The velocities of a free falling body depends on the acceleration due to
gravity, the time it takes for the body to fall, and the distance the body has
fallen.

III.

Free Fall
- A body on a free fall is directly affected by its acceleration due to the gravity
of Earth.
If Vi 0
Vf = Vi + gt
d = Vit + V2gt2
Vf = Vi2 + 2gd

If Vi = 0
Vf = gt
d = gt2
Vf = 2gd

Where:
Vi = initial velocity
Vf = final velocity
t = time
d = distance
g = acceleration due to gravity
g = 9.8 m/s2
Activity:
A stone is dropped from a cliff 100m high, a.) how long does it take the stone to
reach the ground, b.) what is the velocity when it strikes the ground?

Post Test:
An arrow is shot downward to a 50m cliff with an initial velocity of 10 m/s, what is its
velocity when it strikes the ground?
Answer Keys
Pre-test
1. C
2. B
3. A
4. D
5. C
6. B
7. A
8. C
9. A
10. C
Activity:
a) d = 100m
t =?

d = gt2
t = d / g
t = 100/4.9
t = 4.525

b) Vf = gt
Vf = (9.8)(4.52)
Vf = 44.27 m/s
Post Test
d = 50m
Vi = 10 m/s

Vf = Vi2 + 2gd
Vf = (10)2 + 2(9.8)(50)
Vf = 32.86 m/s
