Heat Input - Heat Output) - Heat Input - Heat Output) - (D)

This document summarizes the author's objections to several questions on an exam. For question 22, the author argues that the correct efficiency and power output is option D, not B as listed in the answer key. For question 26, the author says the density of air in a sealed container should remain the same when heated. For question 33, the author says the stress calculation requires knowing how the rails are arranged. For question 56, the author argues that Kaplan turbines can be either inward or outward flow, so the listed answer is incorrect.

Following are the questions which I believe had some error.

After each question

I have given my justification for the objection.

Question No. 22: A simple steam power cycle receives 100,000 kJ/min as heat transfer from hot
combustion gases and rejects 66,000 kJ/min as heat transfer to the environment. If the pump
power required is 1400 kJ/min, the thermal efficiency of the cycle and turbine power output is

a.
b.
c.
d.

51.5 % and 590 kW

34 % and 590 kW
51.5 % and 566.6 kW
34 % and 566.6 kW

Efficiency = 1- ( heat rejected / heat input ) = 1- (66000/100000)= 0.34

1. If the pump is run using some of the power generated from turbine,
Net power output = Power generated Pump power required = 34000 1400 = 32600 kJ/min
= 543.33 kW
2. If the pump is not using power generated from the turbine then,
Turbine power = heat added heat rejected = 100,000 66000 = 34000 kJ/min = 566.67 kW
3. According to the answer key the correct option is ( b ). If the correct option is ( b ) then it means
that the power generated = turbine power is equal to 590 kW = 590 60 kJ/min = 35400 kJ/min
which greater than (heat input heat output). In any condition the turbine output cannot be
greater than (heat input heat output).
So, the correct answer should be (d).

Question No. 26: Air is heated from 0C to 100 C in a sealed metal container. Its density
a. Increases slightly
b. Decreases slightly
c. Remains the same
d. Change cannot be predicted
In this question it is mentioned that the container is sealed properly, then there should be no change
in volume due to thermal expansion. Also there is no change of mass of the system. Therefore there
should be no change in the density of the air. In this question material of the container is not
provided . if I assume invar to be the material which has negligible coefficient of thermal expansion
density would also remain the same in the process.

Question No. 33: Two steel rails each of 12 m length are laid with a gap of 1.5 mm at ends at
a temperature of 24C. The thermal stress produced at a temperature of 40C is (take E=
5

-6

210 N/mm , coefficient of thermal expansion = 1210 /C )

a.
b.
c.
d.

10.5 N/mm
2
12.5 N/mm
2
13.4 N/mm
2
15.5 N/mm

In this question, it is mentioned that only two rails are laid with a gap of 1.5 mm. Nothing is said
about the other ends of the rails (i.e. whether they are fixed or free to expand)
1. If we assume the following orientation:
12 m

12 m

Then upon solving we get stress as 25.9 N/mm .

2. If it is assumed that the ends are not fixed then there would be no stress at all.
3. The answer published given in the answer key is possible only when they are arranged in the
same as the railway tracks are arranged. But here we have only two rails then it is impossible
to have such an arrangement.
So, in this question none of the options is correct unless the arrangement of rails is not specified.

Question No. 56: Match the items in column 1 and column 2 and choose the
correct combination
Column 1
Column -2
K - Kaplan
1 Steam turbine
P - Parsons
2- inward flow reaction
Fo Fourneyron
3 outward flow reaction
Fr Francis
4 gas turbine
a. K 1, P - 4, Fo - 3, Fr 3
b. K 3, P - 1, Fo - 3, Fr 2
c. K 2, P - 1, Fo - 3, Fr 2
d. K 2, P - 4, Fo - 4, Fr 2
In the answer key published by ISRO the correct answer is given as option ( c )
The Kaplan turbine is an outward flow reaction turbine. The design combines features of radial and
axial turbines. On Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaplan_turbine) also it is mentioned
that the Kaplan turbine is an outward flow reaction turbine.
Also it is mentioned in the book fluid mechanics and machinery by RK bansal that an axial flow
turbine can be outward or inward. So Kaplan which is an axial flow turbine can be outward or
inward flow reaction turbine.
