FNSBSD JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Librarian (Secondary)


Supervisor: Principal

Classification: Certified (FEA)

Days/Months: 184 days


General Responsibilities
The secondary librarian is responsible for the development and implementation of an ongoing
instructional program, that ensures students and staff are effective users of ideas and information;
which provides for the informational needs of students and staff on a building level in support of the
district curriculum; empowers students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers
and ethical users of information; ensures equitable access to information; collaborates with teachers
and specialists in designing lessons, instruction and assessment of learning and effectiveness; provides
the leadership to ensure that the library program meets the mission, goals and objectives of the district.
Example of Duties and Expectations
1. Promotes effective use of the library/media center and its collection of materials and equipment to
students, staff, and administration creating an environment that is conducive to active and participatory
learning, resource-based instructional practices and collaboration with teaching staff.
2. Teaches information literacy skills, including a wide variety of web based tools and applications.
3. Provides reference services to students and building staff both on site and makes available
resources in a 24/7 virtual library.
4. Collaborates with the teaching staff in making the best use of both print and digital resources in the
library and classroom, encouraging the use of instructional technology to engage students and to
improve learning, providing 24/7 access to digital information resources for the entire school learning
community.
5. Supervises, trains and reviews performance of library assistants.
6. Supervises, instructs, reviews performance of and grades library student aides.
7. Supervises students before and after school.
8. Encourages the ethical use of information and acts as a resource on copyright and creative
commons.
9. Encourages and fosters the development of lifelong literacy, reading for pleasure and enjoyment.
Library Management
10. Identifies, reviews, selects and organizes information resources appropriate to secondary level
curriculum and students including material in digital formats such as apps, and libguides; performs
regular inventories and surveys to facilitate collection development; removes dated, damaged and worn
materials.
11. Prepares, justifies and administers the library media program budget to support specific program
goals.
12. Provides access to the library media center collection through the management of an accurate,
efficient organization and retrieval system.
13. Organizes, maintains, troubleshoots, updates and when possible repairs multimedia equipment.
14. Catalogs and processes new materials.
Professional Development, Interacting with Parents and the Community and Professionalism
15. Provides leadership and support in the assessment, evaluation and implementation of
instructional technologies advocating for school library programs and maintaining an effective public
relations program.
16. Maintains a professional relationship as a responsible partner in the borough wide library system.

17. Keeps current with educational trends, directions, and technological advances in the areas of
libraries and information literacies through participation in professional learning communities and
professional organizations.
18. Participates in departmental, faculty, and curriculum meetings; library/media professional
development activities and programs; keeps administration apprised of library activity through regular
reports.
Equipment Used
Mac and PC computers, digital devices, multimedia projectors, digital and analog technical equipment,
scanners, printers, copiers, in-house cable systems and distance delivery equipment.
Independent Decisions
Independent decision-making expected in collection development and facility management, verifying
course of action with building principal as needed, based on School Board policy, district and/or building
rules.
Primary Working Contacts
Students, staff, administration, PTA/PTSA, professional organizations, community groups, alumni and
volunteers. Contact is also required with public, university, and special libraries and librarians in the
local area as well as throughout the state.
Supervision
Work under the immediate supervision of the building principal and coordinates with the director of
library media services.
Unusual Working Conditions
Lifting objects up to 35 pounds, climbing step-stool/ladder, occasional use of stairs while holding heavy
objects.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
Hold a current Alaska certificate with a librarian endorsement required. Masters in library and
information science and B.A. or B.S. in education preferred.
Experience
Two years library/media experience in a school setting or two years teaching at the secondary school
level is required.
Skills
Technology skills with experience in computerized and web-based library management systems and
database searching and other digital and social media resources.
Knowledge
Working knowledge with Internet searching and instruction in online reference searching. Working
knowledge in collection building and in processing library materials is preferred, as is evidence of
activity in professional organizations on local, state or national levels.
Abilities
Ability to successfully build and foster relationships with colleagues, administration, parents and school
communities based on professional respect. Ability to create an environment conducive to learning.
Must possess the ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs and plan and
implement professional development for teachers.
