Precalculus Performance Task 1.2

The document describes an elliptical tunnel that has been cleared of debris. The tunnel is 8 feet high and 10 feet wide. Students are asked to measure their car's height and width at home, take a photo indicating the dimensions, and compute whether their car could pass through the tunnel using the standard ellipse equation. They must also include details about their car's brand, year, and plate number in their report.

PRE-CALCULUS
Performance Task # 2: Ellipse
Elliptical Tunnel
An old elliptical tunnel was finally cleared of a heavy amount of
rocks, earth and debris brought about by a series of landslides.
Its height and width are 8 ft and 10 ft, respectively.
Measure the height and the width of your car at home. Take a
photo of its rear side and indicate the dimensions (see the
example below). Will your car be able to pass through the
tunnel? Support your claim with computations. Use the
Cartesian plane and the standard equation of the ellipse in your
analysis. Include in your report the following details about your car: brand, year model, plate number.
