The Liturgical Season of Advent

Mr. Luis Consad

The liturgical season of Advent marks the time of spiritual preparation of the faithful before Christmas.
It is a season of hope and of longing, of joyful expectation and of peaceful preparation. Beginning the
Church's liturgical year, Advent (from adventus in Latin meaning coming) is the season
encompassing the four Sundays starting on the Sunday after the Feast of Christ the King leading up to
the celebration of Christmas. The Catechism of the Catholic Church stresses the two-fold meaning of
this coming: When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this
ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Saviors first coming,
the faithful renew their ardent desire for His second coming (CCC, 524).
A good way to help us in our Advent preparation is use of the Advent wreath. The wreath is a reminder
of our goal eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven, and that in this season we should prepare, do
penance and rejoice because the coming birth of Jesus is near. Each family is suggested to have an
Advent wreath, light it during a common time, and say the prayers. This tradition will help each family
keep its focus on the true meaning of Christmas. In all, we strive to increase our longing for Christ our
Savior and give us the strength to grow in love, that the dawn of His coming may find us rejoicing in
His presence and welcoming the light of His truth.
