Write a Penguin Reader Review
2000 books to be won
10 winners every month
This is the only competition you can (1) ___ your story read by thousands of Penguin Reader
fans all over the world!
Imagine you are a journalist working on the book (2) ___ section of anew teenage magazine.
The challenge is to write a review of a Penguin Reader. So choose your favourite Penguin Reader,
write 250 words of your original ideas about the book and win some great (3) ___.
The competition will start on 1 January 2001 and run until 31 December 2001. Ten (4) ___ (five
from each category) will be announced each month. Each winner will receive book box prizes and
have their names published along with their winning reviews on this website each month. The (5) ___
of our winning students will also receive book boxes as prizes.
Reviews will be judged in two separate (6) ___, Junior (10-14 years of age) and Senior (15-18
years of age) and the prizes will be given In each.

Part 2: Read the film reviews (a-d) then decide which film is best for which person. Match 1-4 with ad.
The Review
a The Love Thing is the latest vehicle for Grant Twiss, recently voted most attractive man in the world by Girl
Alive magazine. The story is minimal. Twiss's character, lovable Simon, is the only one of his friends who is
not married. Twiss goes to all the weddings until he eventually finds love. Will you like it? Yes, of course you
will.
b Cameraman Pete Olnay won an award for some of the stunning shots of the Rocky Mountains in
Ben, Gin and Tilly. Ben and Gin are dogs and Tilly is a cat. When a family leave home and leave their
animals behind, Ben, Gin and Tilly travel a thousand miles across the Rockies to find them. All three
animals can talk and their pet's-eye view of life is a treat.
c Wyatt Earp was born in Pella, Iowa. He was just old enough to fight on the Union side in the Civil
War- he was fifteen. His family went to California in 1864 as part of a wagon train. He arrived in
Tombstone, Arizona, in 1879 and the famous gunfight at the OK Corral between the Earp Brothers and
Doc Holliday was two years later. Only Wyatt was alive after the gunfight. It's a great story and it is
well told in Wyatt, veteran director Bob Santana's first film for ten years.
d As a couple they are just too good to be true. He is an award winning scientist. She is a brilliant
concert pianist, but she gave it up to look after the kids. This is America, so they are both beautiful.
And their house is beautiful, even if it is haunted. But what the spirit tells Petronella (Carrie Langtry)

about her husband (Barney Grable) makes her see their marriage in a new light. For one thing he tries
to kill her. And I can still hear her scream. You really must see The House on the Hill.

My idea of heaven is to go to a good film and then a meal with about six girlfriends. Ideally, the film
should be romantic without being too silly. And a few good-looking male film stars always helps!
