S T - MIE 1107S 2000: Tatistical Hermodynamics

This document is a problem set on statistical thermodynamics that contains 5 problems. Problem 1 involves calculating the phases, volumes, and energies of 1 kmol of H2O at 100°C using canonical ensembles. Problem 2 considers an ideal solid with N particles that can be in one of two energy states and involves calculating the number of particles in each state for a given energy, the number of quantum states, the canonical partition function, and the average numbers of particles in each state when in contact with a temperature reservoir. Problem 2e involves plotting (kT)/(ε2-ε1) versus n1/n2 and discussing the conditions for negative absolute temperature and the direction of energy transport between specimens with positive and negative

STATISTICAL THERMODYNAMICS - MIE 1107S

2000

PROBLEM SET NO. 6

1.0 A system contains one kmol of H2O, has a volume of one m3 and is maintained at a
temperature of 100C.
A. What is the volume and total number of moles of each phase?
B. When each phase is represented by a canonical ensemble, suppose it is found
that the probability of a system in the most probable measurement-set having an
energy E is given by
1
( E E )2
p ( E ) = ----------------- exp -------------------2 2
2 2
Show a plot of p ( E ) for each phase. Give the values for the most probable and average
energy of each phase. Is the value of the energy that you state an absolute energy? If not
state the reference condition.
2.0 Consider an ideal solid that consists of N particles. One particle is at each lattice
point. Suppose each particle can have only one of two possible states, 1 or 2 . A
particle in 1 has an energy 1 and in the other state the energy 2 , where 2 > 1 .
A.

If the energy of the solid has the value E n , how many particles are in states 1
and how many in 2 ? Denote these numbers as n 1 and n 2 .

B. If the energy of the solid is E n , how many quantum mechanical states are available to the solid.
C.

If the solid is now surrounded by a reservoir that has a temperature T and the
solid freely exchanges energy with the reservoir, construct the expression for the
canonical partition function.

D. If a large number of measurements are made of the energy of the solid when it is
surrounded by the temperature reservoir, what will be the average number of particles in state 1 and in state 2 ? Denote these averages as n 1 and n 2 .
E. Show a plot of ( kT ) ( 2 1 ) as a function of n 1 n 2 . Under what conditions
can the absolute temperature be negative? If a specimen of the solid with a positive absolute temperature is brought in contact with a specimen with a negative
absolute temperature, what will be the direction of the energy transport?
