School Activities Which They Must Attend. This Way They Will Become More Involved in School and Their Grades Will Improve

The passage disagrees with the claim that mandatory after-school activities would help underachieving students improve their grades. It argues that compulsory extracurricular activities could decrease students' interest in school if they are activities that do not suit their personalities. It also claims that mandatory activities would leave students with little time for academic study and test preparation. Finally, it states that while extracurricular activities provide benefits, academic success depends more on studying course material than on participation in after-school programs. The passage concludes that making extracurricular activities compulsory would not be an effective way to support underachieving students.

Topic 12: The best way to help underachieving pupils is to have compulsory after
school activities which they must attend. This way they will become more involved
in school and their grades will improve.

Some people claim that compulsory extra-curricular activities would encourage

underachieving pupils to commit themselves more in school and increase their
academic performance. I completely disagree with this point of view.
In my opinion, there are several reasons why mandatory activities are not the
optimal solution to support students who do not perform well. Firstly, when a
student is required to present at every extra-curricular activity, which does not suit
his personality, his interest in both the activity and school will drop considerably.
Secondly, besides the regular academic program, attending after school activities
fully cost students a great amount of time. Therefore there will be barely any time
for revision and review the lessons, and this will adversely influence students
academic performance. Finally, adding extra-curricular activities to a rigorous school
schedule may be tricky, there can be some conflicts and problem between the
social activities and academic requirements.
It is spending time studying the lessons and preparing for the upcoming exams that
can truly increase the scores. I also believe that after school activity is distinctly
different from the academic program. While the extra-curricular activities
strengthen students health, social skill and real life experience, the academic
subjects still heavily concerns about theory and knowledge. Students may devote
more time and energy in the outdoor projects and lose their attention to the
academic program. As a result, extra-curricular activities hardly contribute to the
academic success of a student, they can also deter the academic improvement and
school involment. One cannot pass his final exam with low scores and a great record
of extra-curricular activities record.
In conclusion, I believe that extra-curricular activities should not be a part of the
compulsory program to support underachieving students for the certain reasons
mentioned.
