PASSAGE 2
Mermaids are beautiful creatures that are half woman and half fish. There are many stories, songs, and poems about these creatures. But
thats not all. For many years people have said that they exist for real. On June 15 th, 1608, two seamen saw a woman in the middle of the sea.
Her skin was white and she had long, black hair. But she had no legs; her bottom was like a fish. She was a mermaid. In 1812, a man in
Exmouth saw and also heard a mermaid singing beautiful songs, while in 1870, on the coast of Aberdeenshire, a fisherman saw and spoke to
one.
Another interesting story is that of six fishermen from the Isle of Yell. In 1833, they were fishing near the island when they saw a mermaid. She
was about three-feet long and very pretty. She stayed on their boat for three hours and then she went back into the sea.
In 1830, on the island of Benbecula, some people on the beach saw a strange creature. It looked like a woman and it was playing in the sea.
The people tried to catch it but they couldnt. A boy threw something at it and hit it. A few days later, the people found the creature on the beach
but it was dead. The top half of its body was the size of a three-year old girl and it looked very human. It had soft, white skin and long hair. Its
bottom half was like a fish. So next time you go to the sea, keep your eyes open. You never know, you may see a mermaid!
