twelveprimarychannelsandtheeightextraordinarymeridians.Part2of
theTwelvePrimaryChannelsdiscussesthestomachchannel,theheart
channel,andthesmallintestine.EachYangorganisassociatedwithand
harmonizedbyaYinorgan.Thefollowingdiscussestheurinarybladder,
thekidneychannel,andthePericardiumChannelofHand.

TheUrinaryBladderChannelofFootGreaterYang
TheKidneys(Yin)andtheUrinaryBladder(Yang)arepairedOrgans.
TheycorrespondtoWaterintheFivePhases,thewinterseason,thecold
climacticcondition,thenortherlydirection,thecolorblack,theemotionof
fear,thetasteofsalt,arottensmell,andthesoundofgroaning.Their
sensoryorganistheear.Theiropeningistheurethra.Theycontrolthe
bones,marrow,andbrain,andtheirhealthisreflectedinthehairofthe
head.
ThemainfunctionoftheUrinaryBladderistotransformfluidsintourine
andexcreteitfromthebody.
InQigong,theUrinaryBladderhasneverenjoyedseriousattention.However,itspairingpartnertheKidneyis
oneofthemostimportantorgansonewithwhichallQigongpractitionersareconcernedandtrainmostoften.
ThereasonforthisissimplythattheKidneysaretheresidenceoftheOriginalEssence.

TheKidneyChannelofFootLesserYin
TheKidneys(Yin)andtheUrinaryBladder(Yang)arepairedOrgans.TheycorrespondtoWaterintheFive
Phases,thewinterseason,thecoldclimacticcondition,thenortherlydirection,thecolorblack,theemotionof
fear,thetasteofsalt,arottensmell,andthesoundofgroaning.Theirsensoryorganistheear.Theiropeningis
theurethra.Theycontrolthebones,marrow,andbrain,andtheirhealthisreflectedinthehairofthehead.
TheKidneysstoreOriginalEssence(YuanJing)andarethereforeresponsibleforgrowth,development,and
reproductivefunctions.Theyplaytheprimaryroleinwatermetabolismandcontrolthebodysliquids,andalso
holdthebodysmostfundamentalYinandYang.
BecausetheKidneysaretherepositoriesofthebasalYinandYangofthebody,anydisorder,ifsufficiently

chronic,willinvolvetheKidneys.Moresignificantly,adiseaseoftheKidneyswillusuallyleadtoproblemsin
otherOrgans.MethodsofstrengtheningtheKidneysarethereforeusedbybothmedicalandQigongsocietiesto
increaseormaintainvitalityandhealth.ThesymptomsofDeficientKidneyYangorYinaretypicalsymptomsof
thedisorder,andwillappeartoacertainextentasDeficientYangorYinpatternsinanyOrgan.
ItiseasytounderstandandmemorizethesymptomsofDeficientKidneyYinifonelearnsthecorrespondences
oftheKidneysandremembersthatYinrepresentstheconstructive,nourishing,andfluidaspectsofthebody.
Usually,thelowerbackisweakandsore,thereisringingintheearsandlossofhearingacuity,thefaceisashen
ordark,especiallyundertheeyes.Itiscommontofeeldizzinessandthirst,andtoexperiencenightsweatsand
lowgradefevers.Inaddition,menhavelittleseamenandtendtowardprematureejaculation,whilewomenhave
littleornomenstruation.
DeficientKidneyYangsymptomsaresignificantlyassociatedwithlossofenergyorwarmth.SimilartoDeficient
KidneyYin,thereiscommonlyringingintheears,dizziness,andsorenessinthelowerback.However,the
sorenessischaracterizedbyafeelingofcoldness,lassitude,andfatigue.Weaknessinthelegscanbenoticed.In
men,thereisatendencytowardimpotence,andinbothsexes,clearandvoluminousurineorincontinence.
Usually,DeficientKidneyYingeneratessimilardisordersintheHeartandLiver,whileDeficientKidneyYang
disturbsthefunctionsoftheSpleenandLungs.Theprogressioncouldbeintheoppositedirection.Whenthis
patternisassociatedwiththeLungs,itiscalledKidneyNotReceivingQi,atypeofwheezingcharacterizedby
difficultbreathing,mainlyduringinhalation.InadditiontotheDeficientKidneyYangsymptoms,thisconditionis
alsomanifestedbyafaintvoice,coughing,puffinessintheface,andspontaneoussweating.
TheKidneysperformanimportantroleinthemetabolismofwater.Ifthesefunctionsaredisrupted,thecondition
ofDeficientKidneyswillleadtoSpreadingWater.
InQigongpractice,Essence(Jing)isconsideredthemostoriginalsourceofhumanvitality.Qiisconvertedfrom
Essence,andthisQisuppliestheentirebodyandnourishesthebrainandspirit.ItisbelievedbybothChinese
medicalandQigongsocietiesthattheKidneysaretheresidenceofOriginalEssence.Inordertoprotectyour
inherentEssence,youmuststrengthenyourKidneys.OnlywhenyourKidneysarestrongwillyoubeableto
keepyourEssenceatitsresidence.Therefore,keepingtheKidneyshealthyhasbecomeoneofthemost
importantsubjectsinQigong.
MaintainingtheKidneysinahealthystateincludesprotectingthephysicalkidneysfromdegeneration,and
maintainingasmoothandcorrectlevelofQiflow.Inordertoreachthisgoal,thedietmustbeconsidered.For
example,toomuchsaltisharmfultotheKidneys.EatingtoomucheggplantwillweakentheKidneys.Inaddition,
theconditionofthebodyisalsoimportant.Suchthingsasoverworkingwithoutproperrestwillincreasetension
ontheKidneysandmaketheQiflowstagnant.Inwinter,theKidneyswillhavemoretensionthaninsummer.
Duetothis,theQiflowismorestagnantinthewintertimethaninthesummertime.Therefore,backpain
problemsincreaseinthewinter.
InordertoprotecttheKidneys,QigongpractitionershavestudiedtherelationshipoftheKidneystonature,
food,andeventoemotionalstates.Theyhavedevelopedmassagetechniquesandspecificexercisestoincrease
QicirculationintheKidneysduringthewinter.SincethehealthoftheKidneysisrelatedtotheemotionsaswell,
learninghowtoregulatethemindinordertoregulatetheQihasbecomeoneofthemajortrainingmethodsin
Qigong.

ThePericardiumChannelofHandAbsoluteYin
ThePericardium(Yin)andtheTripleBurner(Yang)arepairedOrgans.Theyaresaidtocorrespondtothe
MinisterialFire,asopposedtotheSovereignFireoftheHeartandSmallIntestine.ThoughthePericardium
hasnoseparatephysiologicalfunctions,itisgenerallymentionedwithregardtothedeliriuminducedbyhigh
fevers.
TheregulationofQiinthePericardiumisconsideredaveryimportantsubjectinQigong.
ItisbelievedthattheHeart,themostvitalorganinyourbody,musthaveaproperlevelofQicirculationinorder
tofunctionnormally.TheQileveloftheHeartcanberaisedeasilytoanabnormalstatebyillness,emotional
disturbance,exercise,orinjury.ThefunctionofthePericardiumistodissipatetheexcessQifromtheHeartand
directittotheLaogongcavity,locatedinthecenterofthepalm.
FromLaogong,theexcessQiwillbereleasednaturallyandhence,regulatetheHeartsQilevel.TheLaogong
cavityisusedinQigongmassagetoreducethebodystemperatureduringafever.Youcanseethatthepurpose
ofthePericardiumistoregulatetheQiintheHeartthroughtheLaogongcavity.
YoushouldunderstandthatinQigongitisbelievedthattherearefivecenters(calledgates)wheretheQiofthe
bodyisabletocommunicatewiththesurroundingenvironment,and,consequently,regulatetheQilevelinyour
body.TwoofthesefivecentersaretheLaogongcavities,andtwoothersareYongquan,usedtoregulatetheQi
intheKidneys.Thefifthoneisyourface.Thefaceisconnectedandrelatedtomanyofyourorgans.Whenever
anyofyourorganQiisnotnormal,itshowsonyourface.
