1.load Test On DC Shut Motor

This document outlines a procedure to conduct a load test on a DC shunt motor to determine its performance characteristics. The test involves varying the load applied to the motor via a brake drum and pulley system and measuring the voltage, current, speed, torque, input power and output power. Plots of output power versus efficiency, torque, speed, current and a speed versus torque plot will be generated from the experimental data to characterize the motor's electrical and mechanical performance. Precautions are provided like starting and stopping the motor at no load to protect it.

Circuit Diagram

Theory:
This Method is direct method to find the performance characteristics of the DC shunt motor. In
this method the motor is directly loaded by connecting brakes which are with pulley and motor is
subjected to rated load so the entire power is wasted. The belt around the water cooled pulley has its
ends attached to spring balances s1and s2.The belt tightening hand wheels h1 and h2 help in adjusting
the load on the pulley so that the load on the motor can be varied.

Procedure:
1. All the connections are as per the circuit diagram.
2. 220V, DC supply is given to the motor by closing DPST switch.
3. Move the 3-point starter handle form OFF to ON position slowly and motor starts running.
4. Vary the field rheostat until the motor reaches its rated Speed and take voltmeter and ammeter
readings.
5. Apply the load by brake drum pulley and for each application of load and the following readings are
tabulated.

Voltmeter (VL),

Ammeter (IL),

Spring forces S1 & S2 and

Speed (N)

6. Calculate and Plot the performance characteristics of the DC shunt motor.

7. Remove the load slowly and keep the rheostat at starting position and switch OFF the supply by
using DPST switch.

Precautions:
1. Initially 3-point starter should be kept at OFF position and later it must be varied slowly and
uniformly from OFF to ON position.
2. DC shunt motor should be started and stopped at no load condition.(No load condition is
obtained by loosening the belt around the brake drum and S1 and S2 shows zero reading)
3. Field rheostat should be kept at minimum position at the start of the experiment.
4. Brake drum has to be cooled periodically with water when it is under load.
