ABSTRACT
MASTER OF ENGINEERING
(Energy Engineering)
NOVEMBER 2011
DURAIRAJ. K
Roll Number
2009276007
Dr. R. VELRAJ
Professor and Director
AU-FRG Institute for CAD/CAM
College of Engg.Guindy Campus
Anna University
Chennai 600 025.
Heat exchangers are devices that provide the flow of thermal energy
between two or more fluids at different temperatures. Heat exchangers are used in a
wide variety of applications. These include power production; process, chemical
and food industries; electronics; environmental engineering; waste heat recovery;
manufacturing industry; and air-conditioning, refrigeration, and space applications.
vi
The scope of this project is to design a fixed tubesheet shell and tube heat
exchanger for petrochemical service, subjected to pressure and temperature cycles,
primarily based on ASME (American society of mechanical engineering) code
Section VIII, division 1 with minimum requirements as per the latest edition TEMA
class C specification.
An investigation of the cyclic elastic plastic response of the heat exchanger
due to pressure and thermal loading is presented.
The analysis of the heat exchanger is carried out using the commercial
software, ANSYS with an objective of reducing the cost of the heat exchanger.
