Power Generation Using Simple Household Taps Short

This document proposes generating power from household taps using a device that converts the kinetic energy of flowing water into electrical energy. Water from overhead tanks would pass through a filter and nozzle to gain velocity before striking the blades of a water wheel connected to a motor, generating electricity that can be stored in batteries. Improvements include using two sets of wheels to increase power output and adding a bypass valve. Applications include powering households, agriculture, drainage systems, and industries using large amounts of water. However, the idea was later discarded because it had already been done by previous students.

ABSTRACT
Water is a pretty useful source of energy and is easily available. We can use this energy to convert it into a
more useful source of energy by converting it into electrical energy and storing it in batteries and use it later. The
potential energy of the water in overhead tanks and also from the rainwater drainage pipes can be converted into
kinetic energy and then stored. We look forward to design a device which can efficiently complete this task. Mainly
we do not need water with a very high velocity for normal household purposes.

Temporary design

WORKING

1. The water from the overhead tank will come through the pipes and will have a considerable amount of
pressure energy. This will be connected to the device and will pass through the dirt collector which will have
a fine filter to separate the impurities.
2. This water will then be passed through the nozzle where it will attain some velocity and the strike the blades
of the wheel the penstock provided will control the amount of water striking the blades.
3. The water will strike the blades and will make it rotate and the shaft of the motor will also rotate thus
producing electricity which can be stored and used later.
4. This water will then flow out following the guide which is attached to the casing.
IMPROVEMENTS

2 sets of wheels, nozzles and motors can be used to increase the power generation and also the mass flow
rate of water.
A bypass valve can be provided so that the water flow can be directly achieved.
Small devices can also be made which can directly be attached to the tap and there will not be a nozzle in it.
Gears can be used to vary the speed-torque of the input to the motor.

APPLICATIONS

Households.
Agricultural Pumps.
Rainwater Drainage.
Commercial Industries were water is used on a large scale.

We will be learning the design of turbine wheels, nozzles, CFD analysis and many more concepts..
WHY WE DISCARDED THIS IDEA
We discarded this idea because it was done by our seniors of batch 2013-2014
