Student Classroom Routines and

Guidelines for Meaningful Learning

Before the bell:

Go to the washroom.
Gather your textbook, binder, pens, pencils and homework.
Go to your seat in the class and open your binder. Arrive on time, be seated, open your books
and be ready to start learning when I start the lesson.

At or before the bell:

The door will close and the class will begin. Listen carefully to your teacher for instructions.
Homework will be checked at the beginning of the class and only at the beginning of class.
Include your names, block and date. Staple and hole punch all hand-in pages.
If you are late, wait outside QUIETLY. You might receive a zero for homework. You may not be
permitted to write any short quizzes that may be taking place and you might receive a zero for that quiz.

During the class:

ALWAYS RAISE YOUR HAND TO SPEAK

Talking out of turn when your teacher or another student is talking is unacceptable behaviour. Be
courteous. Wait your turn patiently when you wish to contribute an answer or ask a question.
Every idea and comment made by other students is always accepted with respect. Nobody is
stupid or dumb and any comment made that disrespects others will not be tolerated and will have
appropriate consequences. I expect you to be respectful of other students comments, questions
and answers.

Missed classes and tests:

You are responsible for catching up if you miss a class. Have a friend share their notes. Check
with Mr. Anthony to ensure you have all handouts.
You will receive a ZERO for missed tests. I do not generally allow retests. Instead, I will give you
many opportunities to earn marks through tests, projects, lab reports and assignments. If there is
a good reason for your absence, please explain it to Mr. Anthony. By far, the best thing to do is
to tell Mr. Anthony ahead of time if you are going to be absent from class.
If you miss a lab, schedule a time with your teacher to do the lab. If you miss a lab activity or you
could not submit an assignment on time with a valid reason, please talk with me. Lab activities can
often be done the next day in the morning, or at lunch or sometimes after school.

Why do we need routines?

Routines help people save time over a long period. If our class can save 5 minutes here and
there then we will have extra time for more activities, videos, labs, and games.
Why do we need guidelines for behavior?
It is very important to treat others like you would like to be treated. Distracting the classroom
from learning is very disrespectful to the teacher and to your fellow classmates
What are the consequences?
Any form of disrespect will have a consequence. You may be asked to leave the class, write or
provide an apology, arrange for your parents to see me or receive a zero mark. You will always
have a discussion with your teacher about the situation.
