Transitional Spaces

Transitional spaces between indoor and outdoor areas are important for architecture and urban design but are often overlooked. These in-between spaces can enhance social interaction and neighborhood integration. However, modern cities are designed more for private and functional needs, lacking public spaces that fostered sociability in the past. The research will study how transitional spaces have changed over time in cities and their psychological and behavioral impacts. It will compare earlier integrated urban fabrics to current isolated designs through analysis of city footprints, responses to transitional areas, and elements that encourage interaction. The goal is to understand if past approaches could inform contemporary city planning to create more celebrated, socially cohesive spaces.

SYNOPSIS

TOPIC Spaces in betweenTransitional spaces


Introduction
Architecture is commonly discussed in terms of individual buildingsthe
enclosures in our lives which we consider defining inside. Architectural
elements usually demarcate these spaces, but most dialogues typically deal
separately with either the interior space created within a building, or the exterior
space created by a building and the surrounding urban fabric.The experience of
space in architecture is dynamic with periodic or constant movement between
areas of a building or between inside and outside. Transition is something which
we experience daily, many time in a day and the spaces that create these
experiences and transformation are termed as transitional spaces. These spaces
which are otherwise neglected in the whole building designing process hold a
huge scope in making the transformation more interesting which in turn provides
a platform for an integrated society and better neighbourhood.
The outside space is a place one can never occupy fully /completely for
it is always other , different, at a distance where one is. One cannot be
outside everything , always outside ,to be outside something is always
to be inside something else."

The recent drastic change in technology, economy ,culture and hence urban
lifestyle have driven out a completely different personality in people. People talk
less, participate less and are more confined into their own lifestyle. Building
/spaces are designed solely on functional basis and not with any social or culture
purpose.The city is often projected as being in the process of getting
restructured so as to better deal with a new world order in which our cities must
somehow fit well.
Earlier the focus was more on public spaces , people were more social and
interactive. The spatial configuration allowed an integrated society with better
neighbourhood. Privatization of spaces is killing the urban fabric. There is this
trend of gated communities and emphasis on private spaces.
Framing , fencing and dividing stands for the boundaries to demarcate the
spaces on both sides.
City is usually related with constant movement and mobility,by a continuous flux
of people and events. One reason for the secluded lifestyle could be the
disrupted urban landscape which is not capable of creating a celebrated space.
Transitional space is the connecting layer between the space we were and the
space we will be in, hence rather than terming it as a separate space , it is more
apt to consider it as a merging layer of the two spaces.

The experimental nature of these spaces adds a whole lot sense of dymanism to
the space as it is under constant transformation , one scene completely different
from another.

AIM
The research paper will mainly focus on how these in between spaces shapes the
city and how cities were earlier designed to have a more interesting and
interactive neighbourhood . There is always a notion of private and confinement
into oneself, once he/she steps out of his house or any such private space. And
hence it becomes important to provide a ground for interaction in this hectically
moving and economically driven lifestyle. Nature plays a big role in providing a
healthy and interactive environment ,and at the same time enhancing the quality
of the space. The main focus would be on the idea of a celebrated space and
what impact does it have on an urban context.
It is a space which we visit every day physically but rarely absorb it
psychologically , and hence fail to understand that the space plays a crucial role
in shaping our everyday behavior and social being.
So there lies a huge scope in studying these spaces and study about the
behavioral pattern of people around these spaces in different environments and
contexts. It is necessary to study how these spaces can help to shape a better
lifestyle and social being of a person.

To study response and reaction to various transition spaces

study elements which could encourage interaction

Psychological effect due to scale and proportion, relation with built form.

Hypothesis
The multilayered city fabric has changed over time , in term of spaces, is it
necessary to study these changes and revert back to the previous methods and
incorporate them in the current situations?
Questions asked:

What are the various transitional spaces in a city?

How the footprint of a city has changed for these spaces -in terms of scale
and perception?

How peoples involvement has decreased in these spaces?

What psychological changes are brought by these spaces by redesigning


them with new perspective?

Methodology

Comparative analysis

The study would include comparative analysis of earlier city fabric and
current situations ,to know how the situation have changed in terms of
spaces ,scale and perception.

Experimental analysis
A critical analysis of how people respond to the changes created
and what effect do they have on them psychologically.
The study would include the transformation that have occurred in
terms of spaces with time and how these changes has led to the
current situation.
