Malaysia is a country in Southeast Asia that consists of thirteen states and three
Federal Territories, with a total landmass of 329,845 square kilometres (127,354 sq mi).
The capital city is Kuala Lumpur, while Putrajaya is the seat of the federal government.
The population stands at over 28 million inhabitants. The country is separated into two
regions, Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo, by the South China Sea. Malaysia
borders Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei. The country is located near the
equator and experiences a tropical climate. Malaysia's head of state is the Yang diPertuan Agong, an elected monarch, and the head of government is the Prime Minister.
The government is closely modeled after the Westminster parliamentary system.
Malaysia as a unified state did not exist until 1963. Previously, the United
Kingdom had established influence in colonies in the territory from the late 18th century.
The western half of modern Malaysia was composed of several separate kingdoms.
This group of colonies was known as British Malaya until its dissolution in 1946, when it
was reorganized as the Malayan Union. Due to widespread opposition, it was
reorganized again as the Federation of Malaya in 1948 and later gained independence
on 31 August 1957. Singapore, Sarawak, British North Borneo and the Federation of
Malaya merged to form Malaysia on 16 September 1963. Tensions in the early years of
the new union sparked an armed conflict with Indonesia, and the expulsion of Singapore
on 9 August 1965.
During the late 20th century, this Southeast Asian nation experienced an
economic boom and underwent rapid development. Bordering the Strait of Malacca, an
important international shipping crossroad, international trade is integral to Malaysia's
economy. Manufacturing makes up a major sector of the country's economy. Malaysia
has a biodiverse range of flora and fauna, and is also considered one of the 17
megadiverse countries.

The Pahang state which is located on the east coast is by far the largest state in
Peninsular Malaysia. Covering a land area more than 35000 square kilometer, the
Pahang state currently has a total population count of 13725000 people and this
number is continuing to grow each year. The main ethnic composition in the Pahang
state is the Malays followed by Chinese, Indian, other ethnics and as well as non
citizens.
The state capital of the Pahang state is known as Kuantan whereas the royal capital of
Pahang is the district known as Pekan. On top of the state capital and the royal capital,
the Pahang state has another 9 main administrative districts where these districts are
categorized as Bentong, Bera, Cameron Highlands, Jerantut, Lipis, Maran, Raub,
Rompin and as well as Temerloh. In the early days, the main economy of the Pahang
state depends mostly on tropical timber production and mining. However, with the
declination of natural resources such as lumber, the main trend for the economy
dependency of the Pahang state has shifted towards fishery, petrochemical processing,
gold mining and last but not least, tourism
In the Pahang state, there are actually many wonderful natural attractions as the
geographical terrain in the Pahang state itself is made up from three sections which are
the highlands, rainforests and the coastal area. For the highlands, there are two famous
but completely different highlands here in the Pahang state. Firstly, there is the
Cameron Highlands which emphasize and showcases the beauty of the natural
resources.

Secondly, there is the Genting Highlands which focuses more on entertainment and
enjoyment in the peak of the mountain.
A side from the highlands, there are also the rain forest and of course, the coastal area.
For the rainforest terrain, Malaysias largest national park is situated right at the heart of
the Pahang state where it is a large primary forest which has many endangered animals
staying within the forest. Lastly, there is also the coastal area terrain and that is where
the capital state of Pahang is situated. Besides that, the famous Tioman Island is
located just offshore of the coastal line.
Generally, the people here in the Pahang state are very friendly and down to earth. For
the tourists who wish to escape from the hustle bustle city life, then the Pahang state is
definitely one of the top choices as aside being rich culturally, the Pahang state also has
many wonderful natural resources such as forests, highlands and beaches.

SUNGAI LEMBING PARK (TAMAN BERSEJARAH)

Sungai Lembing Park, which is also known as the historical park is located just 42km from
Kuantan. Sungai Lembing Park is a town that time forgot. Sungai Lembing Park was historically
a rich and famous town, as the main producer of tin in Pahang in early 1900s.

Lembing is Malay for spear, and "sungai" means river. Per local legend, the local ruler
saw a vision of a spear in the nearby river and thus named his town after this vision.
Until the 1970s, Sungai Lembing was a major producer of underground tin. Sungai
Lembing town developed in the 1880's when the British set up the tin mining industry,
although the history of mining in this area extends much further back. From 1891, the
Pahang Consolidated Company Limited, (PCCL), which was under British control, had a
77-year lease to mine the area. PCCL managed the mine from 1906 until its liquidation
in 1986 when world tin prices collapsed.

The pit mines were closed in 1986 due to high operational costs and low yields, but
during their heyday they were among the largest and deepest in the world. The total
tunnel length is 322 km, with a depth of between
610 m and 700 m. A museum highlighting the tin mining industry was opened in 2003.
The museum is housed in an old bungalow once used by the mine manager. The
museum houses a collection of mining artifacts.
Today the town of Sg Lembing is in decline although it was once the richest town in
Pahang, known as El Dorado of the East. In the 1940's about 1400 people worked in
the mine. Today many of the wooden shoplots are closed and people are moving away.
The town straddles the river, and the main street on the right bank is split by an avenue
of majestic trees. At the end, an old wooden building overlooks the padang where
games of cricket and other social activities were held.
A lot of activities can be conducted at Sungai Lembing Park. On the top of Panorama
Hill, one can watch the sunrise. The hot spring, the mining tunnels, 4x4 vehicle tracks
and a deer farm at Sungai Jin which is located about 5km from the town are the places
that must visit when one is visiting Sungai Lembing.

BUKIT GAMBANG WATER PARK

Bukit Gambang Resort City (BGRC) is located within the greater Kuantan the capital
city of Pahang State. It is the natural gateway to the East Coast states of Peninsular
Malaysia. Kuantan radiates a feeling of an exotic beach town waiting to be rediscovered by the East Coast city dwellers due to the opening of the East Coast
Expressway. BGRC is also the home of one of the largest water park in the east coast
of Peninsular Malaysia; offering a 17.1-acre lake, 24,000 square feet wave pool with 8
modes of waves, the longest family raft ride and 6-lane racer slide complete with timing
scoreboard. Come and experience the ideal vacation spot at Bukit Gambang Resort
City - Leisure at its best!

GENTNG HIGHLANDS

From the depth of the jungle, we ascend to the highlands of Genting. Known as The
City of Entertainment, or even the Playground of Malaysia visitors seeking
amusement will definitely not be disappointed! Due to it located on the highlands, the air
in Genting is all-year round cool and refreshing - a far cry of Malaysias usual hot and
humid weather.
At Genting, visitors will find themselves one of Malaysias most established amusement
parks, complete with roller-coasters, gentle and thrill rides for all ages. During the night,
be prepared to feast your eyes on the large array of shows and entertainment ranging
from dazzling displays of magic to enthralling concert performances by well-known
celebrities. All that, coupled with international class hotel rooms and a large selection of
restaurants, makes Genting a wonderful family getaway. The idea of creating a hill
resort located in proximity to Kuala Lumpur came up in the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong's
mind during a business trip to the Cameron Highlands in 1964. He mooted this idea
while enjoying the fresh and crisp air from the balcony at his hotel room.
Subsequently, a study of the maps and Kuala Lumpurs vicinity located the ideal site the 1,800-metre Gunung Ulu Kali, just 55 km from Kuala Lumpur. Tan Sri Lim then set to

transform a remote mountain area amidst the dense virgin tropical jungle and rugged
terrain into a holiday destination.

A private company called Genting Highlands Berhad was set up on 27 April 1965, with
the late Tan Sri Haji Mohammed Noah bin Omar, Tan Sri Lim successfully obtained
approval for the alienation of 12,000 acres (49 km2)
and 2,800 acres (11 km2) of land from the Pahang
and Selangor State Government respectively
between the years 1965 and 1970. An anomaly
happened during the obtaining of the land approvals.
While the Pahang state government swiftly approved a freehold lease,
the Selangor state reluctantly approved a 99-year lease. As a result, Tan Sri Lim Goh
Tong met the then Menteri Besar of Selangor, Dato Harun Idris and telling him that a
freehold lease will be more feasible than a 99-year lease. Finally, the Selangor state
government agreed to grant a freehold lease.

CAMERON HIGLAND

The Cameron Highlands is one of Malaysias most extensive hill stations. It covers an
area of 712 square kilometres (275 sq mi). To the north, its boundary touches that
of Kelantan; to the west, it shares part of its border with Perak.
Situated at the northwestern tip of Pahang, the Camerons is approximately 85
kilometres (53 mi) from Ipoh or about 200 kilometres (120 mi) from Kuala Lumpur.
During the day, the temperature seldom rises above 25 C (77 F); at night, the
temperature can sometimes drop to as low as0.9 C (30.4 F).[1]
The resort has a diverse population of more than 34,000 people. It
comprises Malays, Chinese, Indians and other ethnic groups. The literacy rate here is
above 88 percent.
The plateau was first developed by the British in the 1920s. It is made up of three subdistricts, namely Ringlet (5,165 hectares (12,760 acres)), Tanah Rata (2,081 hectares
(5,140 acres)) and Ulu Telom (63,981 hectares (158,100 acres)). Of the three, Tanah
Rata serves as the administrative centre of the region.
In all, the retreat consists of eight neighbourhoods. The three townships
are Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang. The area's five settlements are the Bertam
Valley, Kea Farm, Tringkap, Kuala Terla and Kampung Raja. All are nestled at an
altitude of more than 1,200 metres (3,900 ft).

11

The gateways to the highlands are via Kuala Lipis or Raub through Pos Betau
to Ringlet. From Perak, it can be accessed either from Tapah or Simpang Pulai.
While from Kelantan, route available from Gua Musang to Pulai in Gua Musang to
Kampung Raja.
The Cameron Highlands got its name from William Cameron, a British surveyor who
was commissioned by the then colonial government to map out the area in 1885.
In a statement concerning his mapping expedition, Cameron mentioned he saw a
vortex in the mountains, while for a (reasonably) wide area we have gentle slopes and
plateau land.
.
Forty years later, Sir George Maxwell visited the locale and decided to transform the
place into a hill station. A development committee was formed in 1925. [3] Later, a road
was constructed from Tapah to the highlands
The building of the road was a challenge. The crew not only had to deal with the
weather; they also had to live with the risk of being struck down with malaria.
By the mid-1930s the resort was proving very popular for local leave. The Green Cow
Tavern at the entrance to the Tallom Valley held the accolade of being the highest hotel
in the peninsular.
When the road was completed in 1931,[5] the British and the locals moved in to settle on
the slopes of the mountain. They were soon followed by tea planters and vegetable
growers who found the fertile soil and cool climate to be especially suitable for the
growing of their crops.
By the mid-1930s, there was a remarkable change in the territory: it now had a ninehole golf course, several cottages, three inns, a police post, two boarding schools, a
dairy, nurseries, vegetable farms, tea estates, a Government Rest House and an
Experimental Agricultural Station.

12

The district continued to grow until the outbreak of the Second World War. During
the Japanese Occupation (19421945), there was hardly any development in the area.
When theJapanese withdrew in August 1945, the place underwent a transformation.
Today, the haven is not only the biggest and best known of Malaysias hill stations; it is
also the highest point in Malaysia which is accessible by car.[6]
There are six mountains at the retreat. The highest peak is Mount Batu
Brinchang (Malay: Gunung Batu Brinchang). At the top of the 2,031-metre
(6,663 ft) mountain is a radio and television station. Close to it is a 15-metre (49 ft)-high
Observation Tower with a good view of the neighbourhood.
Much of the Cameron Highlands is under cultivation. There are some 3,642 hectares
(9,000 acres) of forest.[7] Jungle trails lead visitors to scenic spots, waterfalls and
aboriginal villages.
Most of the tracks here begin at Tanah Rata. There are more than 14 paths to pick and
choose from. Depending on its distance, some routes can take as long as five hours to

NATIONAL PARK (TAMAN NEGARA)

Eventhough rainforest only constitute less than 10% from total forest in the world,
more than half of plants species are found there. However, the native plants and animal
species in the world's tropical rainforests are becoming extinct due to deforestration
and agricultural expansion. Deforestration increases the level of greenhouse gases,
contributes to global climate change, soil erosion, drought and flooding.
Taman Negara is the most extensive protected area of pristine, lowland,
evergreen rainforest in Malaysia. The stated purpose of Taman Negara is "to utilise
the land within the park in perpetuity, for the propagation, protection and preservation
of indigeneous flora and fauna".
Dating back over 130 million years, Taman Negara is one of worlds oldest
tropical rainforest. During the Ice Ages, much of the Earth was covered by immense
glaciers that kept the global climate cool. Consequently, many of the planet's tropical
rainforests had to wait until the glaciers receded before they could evolve. Taman
Negara rainforest, however, was blessed with a location far enough away from the ice
that it developed 130 million years ago - far earlier than those of Africa and Latin
America. The forest itself is one of the most ancient on the planet, far older than
the equatorial forests of the Amazon or the Congo. It has for tens of thousands
15

of years been the home of nomadic forest people, and ancient civilizations have
flourished as well as disappeared in its vastness.
Legends abound & archaeologists have only just begun their efforts here. Equally
exciting discoveries are now being made by genetic biologists, who have begun
searching the wealth of life in Malaysia's forests for new medicines with which to
combat AIDS, cancer, and many other illnesses. Taman Negara is also a home to
Peninsular Malaysia's highest peak ie. Gunung Tahan as well as a home to more than
10,000 species of plants, 300 species of mammals such as the Sumatran Rhinoceros,
the Asian Elephant, tigers, sun bear and tapirs; 300 species of fish and 250 species of
birds. With so much to see and to do, a trip to Taman Negara is a must on your itinerary.
