MEST 4 in A Nutshell

1. The MEST4 coursework unit makes up 50% of the A2 course and consists of a 2000 word critical investigation and a linked production piece. 2. Students must explore in detail one of the following for their critical investigation: a media text, theme, issue, or debate. They then propose a linked production piece in one of the following platforms: film, TV, radio/podcast, newspaper, magazine, or website. 3. The linked production should be more polished than AS level work but only focus on one platform. It must be a minimum of 3 pages for print work, 3 webpages for digital work, or a maximum of 5 minutes for audio/visual work.

MEST4 Coursework Unit

MEST4 makes up 50% of your A2 course and consists of:

A 2000 word Critical Investigation (48 marks)

Linked Production (32 marks)

Your A2 coursework is intended to move on from your AS work in that it is meant to synthesise
theory and production, taking into account various contextual factors and the effects of the
21st century global media industry.

You need to explore in detail ONE of the following:

text (film, game, website, TV programme, newspaper, magazine etc.)

a theme (dying in computer games, villain-hero links with superheroes)
an issue (censorship in TV broadcasting, shock jocks in radio)
a debate (is there a new genre of British Horror emerging?)

1. a
2.
3.
4.

You must make sure that the two pieces are directly linked as once you have chosen an area
for your investigation from one of the four options above, you then have to propose a linked
production piece.
This linked production should be more polished than an AS piece but you will only have to
produce a piece on ONE platform, unlike in AS. You could choose to work in:
a)
b)
c)
d)
e)
f)

Film (edited footage, burned on DVD)

TV (edited footage, burned on DVD)
Radio / Podcast (sound editing, burned on CD)
Newspapers (desk top publishing, image editing, printed on paper)
Magazine (desk top publishing, image editing, printed on paper)
Website (digital production, html files burned on CD-ROM)

Work will be individual again and you are expected to produce a minimum of 3 pages for Print
work, 3 webpages for E-media work and a maximum of 5 minutes for radio, TV or Film work.
Found images are strongly discouraged at A2.
There is the possibility, if arranged with teacher and explained in Proposal, that the Critical
Investigation could be produced as a DVD commentary or wiki-based investigation.
