9th Grade- Quarter 1 Chemistry 1 Review for Midterm Exam

Study Recommendations:
1) Re-read all chapter sections- Chapter 18- section 18.1, 18.2, and 18.3; Chapter
19-section 19.1; Chapter 23- section 23.1
2) Review all labs, assignments, and notes. This will take several hours, so split it
up over a few days. Start as soon as possible.
3) Make notes of important reminders on your 3x5 notecard. You may write on
both the front and back of the notecard. You will also be allowed to use the periodic
table in your agenda.
4) Be sure to bring your notecard to the test on Thursday/Friday 9/15-9/16!!!!

Outcome

Specifics

Outcome A:
Understand and
be able to use
properties of
matter to classify
substances.

1) Apply density to identify substances

a. Know the formula for density and how to use it
b. Understand the difference between density and mass
2) Apply melting point and boiling point to identify substances.
a. Review the graph showing temperature over time as heat is
added to a substance
b. Understand heat of fusion and heat of vaporization
3) Apply reactivity to identify substances
a. Understand that some substances will react with each other and
some will not
4) Apply conductivity to identify substances.
a. understand that some substances conduct electricity and some
do not
1) Evaluate the development of atomic theory through technology.
a. Name the three main models of atoms that we have discussed,
the scientist who developed them, and what improvements they made
over the last model
2) Diagram an atom including location, relative size and charge of protons,
neutrons and electrons.
a. Be able to draw and explain atoms using each type of model
b. Understand electron shells, and orbitals, and their importance
c. Be able to use the periodic table to answer basic questions
about atoms, including number of protons, neutrons, electrons, how
many electrons are in the valence shell, and whether the atom has
isotopes or is an ion.
3) Describe how a nucleus is held together
a. Describe the strong nuclear force
1) Create a visual/kinesthetic representation of the four types of chemical
bonds
a. Be able to draw and explain covalent, ionic, and hydrogen bonds
2) Analyze how the types of bonds affect how substances interact
a. be able to predict whether a substance will dissolve in another
based on the type of bonds
3) Connect chemical bonds to physical properties.
a. Be able to name the properties of each type of substance
(covalent & ionic) and describe what effect hydrogen bonds have on the
properties of a substance.

Outcome B:
Understand the
basic structure of
an atom.

Outcome C :
Understand how
atomic
interactions give
way to bulk
properties
Equations:
Density: m/v=d

Mass: v*d=m

Mass number: protons + neutrons = mass number

Volume: m/d=v

Neutrons: mass number - protons = neutrons
