Romania is the largest country in Southeastern Europe and the twelfth-largest in Europe.
Romania has a population of about 21 million people. There are 88, 9% Romanians, 6, 5 %
Hungarians, 3, 3% Gipsy and 1, 3 other ethnic minorities.
The lartgest city in Romania is Bucharest, the capital city of our country, with a population
of about 1.883.000 inhabitants. The second biggest city in Romania is Cluj-Napoca. Other
big cities are the following: Timioara, Iai, Constana, Craiova, Bra ov and Galai. These
towns are very populated.
Romania has a climate which ranges from temperate to continental.
The terrain is distributed equally between mountains, hills and plains.
The Danube River forms a large part of the border with Serbia and Bulgaria, and flows into
the Black Sea, forming the Danube Delta, which is the second-largest and best-preserved
delta in Europe, and also a biosphere reserve and a biodiversity World Heritage Site. At
5,800 km2 (2,200 sq mi), the Danube Delta is the largest continuous marshland in
Europe, and supports 1,688 different plant species alone.
The scenery is amazing everywhere you go in Romania, you can see stunning mountains,
attracting seaside resorts, old castles and unforgettable landscapes.
2. Wildlife
Romania has a large amount of wild animal life. Its fauna consists of 33,792 animal species.
Many species that are disappearing or have disappeared entirely in other parts of the world
still flourish in Romania. One such species is the house sparrow.
Larger animals such as wild boar, wolf, lynx, fox, bear, roe deer, chamois, and goat are
primarily found in the Carpathian Mountains. Typical animals in the plains are the hare,
squirrel, polecat, and badger. In the Danube Delta region many species of birds can be
found as it is a resting point for migratory birds. There are about 3,600 feral horses in the
Danube Delta as well as 2,000 in the Letea nature reserve. Pike, sturgeon, flounder,
carp, salmon, herring, eel and perch are among the species of fish found offshore and in the
rivers.
3. Sport
Oina is the traditional Romanian sport but not very famous among the Romanians. The
most appreciated and enjoyed sports are football and tennis. There are lots of popular
sporting personalities in Romania at the moment, such as the well-known tennis players
Simona Halep and Horia Tecau. Important sports events are organised every year in
Romania. For instance, National football championship is extremely watched by both men
and women. Not to mention the tennis tournaments organized by the rich Ion iriac. The
biggest stadium in Romania is the newly-opened National Arena in Bucharest.
4. Famous people
Some famous people in Romania are the following: Nadia Comneci- gymnast, Simona
Halep-tennis player, Gheorghe Hagi- football player, Mihai Eminescu-poet, Nicolae
Ceauescu- politician or Maria Ltreu- singer.
5. Places to visit
Transylvania is the best part of our country which shouldnt be missed by anyone. The
legends, history and gothic castles of this region have inspired Irish author Bram Stoker to
set his vampire novel Dracula here.
Some of other destinations in Transylvania include cities like Sibiu a European Cultural
Capital with excellent museums, high-quality restaurants and a fantastic Old Town;
Sighisoara a fairytale of a citadel with colored houses and a UNESCO-protected historic
center; Brasov a lively and cosmopolitan mountain city full of medieval treasures,
bohemian cafes and a wealth of things to see and do; and Cluj-Napoca one of Romanias
biggest, most vibrant and culturally-rich cities.
