Physics Notes Class 11 CHAPTER 2 UNITS AND MEASUREMENTS

Physical quantities are anything that can be measured in physics, like length, mass, and time. Fundamental quantities have units like meters, kilograms, and seconds that are independent of each other. Derived quantities are made from fundamental quantities and have units like square meters and cubic meters. Measurement involves comparing a physical quantity to its standard unit. Instruments are evaluated based on their accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and range.

Physics Notes Class 11 CHAPTER 2 UNITS AND MEASUREMENTS

The comparison of any physical quantity with its standard unit is called measurement.
Physical Quantities All the quantities in terms of which laws of physics are described, and
whose measurement is necessary are called physical quantities.
Units A definite amount of a physical quantity is taken as its standard unit. The standard unit
should be easily reproducible, internationally accepted.
Fundamental Units Those physical quantities which are independent to each other are called
fundamental quantities, and their units are called fundamental units.

Definitions
Accuracy-this is how close the experimental value is to the true value.
Precision-is a measure of how close a measuring instrument can differentiate between
quantities, that is give more information on measured values.
Sensitivity-measures the response of an instrument to the smallest change in input.
Range-is the size of the interval between the maximum and minimum quantities a measuring
instrument can give.
