Hierarchy Model: By: Somya Gupta Puneet Goel Harshith Y Anchal Kapoor

The document describes Maslow's hierarchy of needs model. It provides an example of how an employee's needs shifted according to her circumstances. Priya was satisfied with her lower level needs for food, housing, and medical care through her job. She was motivated by higher level needs for belonging and esteem. However, when layoffs were announced and her safety need was threatened, her primary motivation became keeping her job to ensure her lower needs were still met. Once she learned her job was secure, her higher level needs motivated her again. The document analyzes how Priya's needs changed according to whether her lower or higher needs were threatened or satisfied.

Reasons for Application

People work in order to satisfy their
needs. Need guides the behavior of
an individual/employee and provides
motivation.
Manager focuses on this theory to
motivate their subordinates and give
direction to them for the achievement
of the organizational goals.
Everybody has different levels of
needs, when the lower level needs
are satisfied only then the higher level
needs are aimed for their satisfaction.
The theory is used for designing the
incentives given to the employees, on
the basis of the nature of their needs.

Need Hierarchy Model.

Case
Priya an assistant sales manager with a leading FMCG
company in Gurgaon and a single parent, earns a good salary
and benefits that enable her to provide for her familys
physical wellbeing-ample food, comfortable housing and good
medical care. After her company announces that it is down
sizing and will be reducing its workforce by 10%,she fears
being laid off (which triggers a safety need).now she is
unlikely to be overly concerned about higher level needs to
belong to a group or her own self esteem needs that motivate
her to perform technically accurate work. Rather, she is likely
to be motivated to do whatever she believes will enable her
to keep her job and /or to begin looking discretely for other
employment. Once the lay offs are announced and when Priya
realizes that she is not on the list, she breathes a sigh of relief
and resumes work with a higher order need energizing her
behavior.

Analysis of the case study

The following stages depicts the shift of need according to the
situation:
First stage:
1.Basic hierarchical needs: To earn good salary and provide proper
food, clothing and shelter to her family.(physiological needs).
2.Her higher level needs: To belong to a group or her own self
esteem needs that motivate her to perform technically accurate
work. (social, self esteem and self actualization needs)
Second stage:
After the announcement of reduction in work force by the
company:
1.Basic needs: Sustainability of a job(safety needs).
Third stage:
After the realization of her job being secure:
1. Higher level needs : Belongingness to a group and self esteem
needs in order to perform technically accurate work.(social, self
esteem and self actualization needs)

Human life will never be understood unless its highest
aspirations are taken into account. Growth, self
actualization, the striving towards health, the quest for
the identity and autonomy, the yearning for excellence
must by now be accepted beyond question as a
widespread and perhaps universal human tendency
Abraham Maslow essentially made self-fulfilment and
happiness a central part of his lifes work. . When the
physiological needs are not fulfilled ,people become
preoccupied with filling those needs above all else.
Once the basic needs are fulfilled, other needs
invariably arise.
