PRACTICUM WEEK : 1

TITLE: INSTRUCTION DELIVERY SKILLS
1. PROBLEM
I have realised a particular weakness in my instruction delivery skill this past
week. As I went through with my lesson, I was aware of the flaw in my instruction for my
pupils during class activity. I had trouble in organizing my instruction for my pupils to
follow. It was not obvious at times but as I conducted an unfamiliar activity or instructed
my pupils to do a new type of activity in the classroom, I had trouble finding simple
instruction that would help my pupils to understand the lesson better. It had seemed as
though I was confused on what instruction should come first before the other especially
when the classroom started to become noisy and my pupils started to surround me and
asked for clarification one after another.
This problem happened due to my lack of familiarity and nervousness as I
conducted a new activity in the classroom. The habit of going with the flow and lack of
thoughtfulness on the possible problems that the pupils might encounter while doing
their work or a new activity was what caused me to become unable to come up with a
quality instruction that could truly help clarify the activity to my pupils.
2. Suggestions for improvement
I need to be very careful with my instruction especially for new and
unfamiliar activity. I need to predict the kind of problems that my pupils would encounter
while doing the work and come up with a set of instruction that would help to minimize
or overcome the problem. I should also use sticky notes or notes paper to jot down
important instruction that I would like to relay to the pupils during activity. Other than
that, I need to be calm and sort out my thoughts properly before I proceed to give any
instruction to my pupils in order to avoid confusion or ambiguity in my instruction.
3.Period of time
Within a week, I was able to become calmer as I delivered my instruction to the
pupils. I have also started to write notes to remind me of any important information or
instruction that I would like to deliver to my pupils. However, as of now, I am still not able
to completely predict the kind of problem that my pupils would encounter during the
activity due to the differences in their comprehension and proficiency level.
4.Evaluation on successfulness
I would ask my supervisors and my mentors to give their comments and advice
to improve myself.
5. Further action.
Improving my instruction delivery skills is an ongoing process. I would have to
learn more through my own experience in the classroom as I go about my own lesson.
Consulting with more experienced teachers will be helpful for me to improve on this
area.
