Emp Assignment 1

The document provides examples of products for each of the eight process types listed in the textbook: market-pull, technology-push, platform products, process intensive products, customized products, high-risk products, quick-build products, and complex systems. For each process type, the document gives the definition from the textbook and an example product along with an explanation of why it fits that category.

ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT PLANNIG

ASSIGNMENT 1

BY: JAYMIN MAHESHWARI

PROBLEM:
The Exhibit 2-4 on page 19 of the primary text
book (Product Design and Development) lists eight
process
types:
Market-Pull,
Technology-Push,
Platform Products, Customized Products, High-Risk
Products, Quick-Build Products and Complex
Systems.

Provide at least one product for each process

type. Provide a specific product name and a
company.
Also explain why you believe that your choice
of a product is categorized in that process type.

1.Generic (Market-Pull) Products:

The generic process is most like the process used in a
market-pull situation: a firm begins product development
with a market opportunity and then uses whatever
available technologies are required to satisfy the market
need (i.e., the market pulls the development decisions).
Source: Product Design and Development, 6th edition, Ulrich and Eppinger

Example:
Black & Decker 12- Volt Smart Electric Drill/Driver
Power tools are used in industry, in construction, in
the garden,
for housework tasks
such
as cooking, cleaning, and around the house for purposes
of driving (fasteners), drilling, cutting, shaping, sanding,
grinding, routing, polishing, painting, heating and more.
There is extreme need of power tools now days and
therefore it is great opportunity in this field. This product
is designed to meet its customers need.

2.Technology Push Products:

In developing technology-push products, the firm begins
with a new proprietary technology and looks for an
appropriate market in which to apply this technology
(that is, the technology pushes development).

Example:
Polaris 14 TERRAINARMOR NPT TIRES

Never get a flat with revolutionary TerrainArmor tire

technology, the industrys first non-pneumatic tire built to
sustain damage without compromising functionality or
mobility. Originally designed for military environments,
this polymeric web design can withstand harsh terrain
that would typically destroy an air-filled tire.
There is no such product in the market which makes it fit
for technology push product segment.

3.Platform Products:
A platform product is built around a pre-existing
technological subsystem (a technology platform).
Source: Product Design and Development, 6th edition, Ulrich and Eppinger

Example:
Google Chrome
Google Chrome is a web browser developed by Google. It
was first released in 2008. It first used Microsoft Windows
platform and was later ported to Linux, OS X,
IOs and Android.

4.Process Intensive Products:

Characteristics of the product are highly constrained by
the production process.

Example:
Nature Valley Protein Chewy Bar

Energy Bars are produced by an existing production

process; combing and freezing of different raw materials.

5.Customized Products:
New products are slight variations of existing
configurations
Source: Product Design and Development, 6th edition, Ulrich and Eppinger

Example:
Audi Q2 Edition 1 Car
Edition 1 is limited version of the new Audi Q2 crossover.
Based on the sporty S line trim, the small crossover adds
special 19-inch alloy wheels and a Quantum Grey paint
colour.
It also benefits from the addition of a Titanium Black
styling pack, which adds black exterior trim around the
front grille and door sills. The 19-inch alloy wheels are
finished in Anthracite Black, while it also gets LED lights
all round, with dynamic sweeping indicators.
Inside, there are black and Amaretto part-leather seats,
a leather steering wheel and illuminated door-sill trims.
Theres also an ambient lighting package, which allows
you to choose between 10 different lighting colours.

6.High Risk Products:

High-risk products are those that entail unusually large
uncertainties related to the technology or market so that
there is substantial technical or market risk. The generic

product development process is modified in high-risk

situations by taking steps to address the largest risks in
the early stages of product development.
Source: Product Design and Development, 6th edition, Ulrich and Eppinger

Example:
USA 267 Satellite for Radar Imaging.
Delta
IV is
an expendable
launch
system in
the Delta rocket family. The rocket's main components
are designed by Boeing's Defense, Space & Security
division and built in the United Launch Alliance (ULA)
facility in Decatur, Alabama.
There are many technical uncertainties in successfully
launching a satellite, its lifespan cannot be predicted
accurately and the whole project expenses would be
around $500 million.

7.Quick Build Products:

For the development of some products, such as software
and many electronics products, building and testing
prototype models is such a rapid process that the designbuild-test cycle can be repeated many times.
Source: Product Design and Development, 6th edition, Ulrich and Eppinger

Example:
Google Maps
Google
Maps is
a
desktop web
mapping service
developed by Google. It offers satellite imagery, street
maps, 360 panoramic views of streets (Street View),
real-time traffic conditions (Google Traffic), and route
planning for traveling by foot, car, bicycle (inbeta),
or public transportation.

A new version of the application is developed and

released every few months, fixing bugs and with better
user interface.

8.Complex Products:
System must be decomposed into several subsystems
and many components.
Source: Product Design and Development, 6th edition, Ulrich and Eppinger

Example:
Boeing 777 Aircraft
The Boeing 777 is a family of long-range wide-body twinengine jet
airliners developed
and
manufactured
by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It is the world's
largest twinjet and has a typical seating capacity for 314
to 451 passengers, with a range of 5,235 to
9,500 nautical miles (9,695 to 17,594 km).
It consists of complex engineering structures and
equipments. Its parts are developed in different countries
and takes complex line of assembly to assemble it.
