5 Ce52 Design of RC Structures

This document contains 10 questions related to the design of reinforced concrete structures. Question 1 asks to derive an expression for percentage of tension and determine characteristic concrete strength from compression test results. Question 5 asks to determine reinforcement for a T-beam with given loading and geometry. Question 9 asks to design a rectangular footing for a given column load and soil bearing capacity.

Derive an expression for percentage of tension, for a given factored moment, material
properties and sectional properties.
Determine the characteristic strength of concrete which has given the following
compression test results on 150mm cubes.
40, 45, 38 41, 39, 51 48 38 N/mm2

c)

A rectangular section of effective size 230mm X

beam for a clear span of 6m. The thickness
maximum total uniformly distributed load can
reinforced with steel 4 bars of 20mm diameter
Use M25 concrete and Fe 415 steel.

Design a doubly reinforced beam is of 300mm x 600mm overall size, with an effective
cover of 50mm on both the compression and tension sides, factored moment 400 KNm. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel. Sketch the details of reinforcements.
What is a doubly reinforced beam? Explain the circumstances of using doubly
reinforced beams.

Explain for any two types of shear failure in R.C beams with the help of neat sketches.
A simply supported beam 300mm wide and 600mm effective depth carries a uniformly
distributed load of 70 KN/m including its own weight over an effective span of 5 mts.
the reinforcement consists of 4 bars of 25mm diameter, out of these, two bars can be
safely bent up at one m distance from left support. Design the shear reinforcement for
the beam. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.

A simply supported slab 120mm thick a span 3.60m is reinforced with 10mm diameter
at 100 mm pitch at an effective cover of 20mm, if concrete grade is M20 and steel
grade Fe 415. Calculate the deflection due to creep for slabs, when it carries imposed
live load of 2 KN/m2 and floor finish 1KN/m2. Assum e 50% live load to be permanent

and ribs below the slab are 200mm wide and 300mm deep, the slab and beams are
cost as to act together, the beams are spaced at 4.5m centre to centre. Determine the
reinforcement for T-beam to carry an imposed load of 5 KN/m2 of the slab, floor finish
