Projection
The scientific method of transferring location on Earths surface to a flat map is
called projection. 4 types of distortion can result:
shape
distance (increase or decrease)
relative size
place-name
site
situation
mathematical location
Place Names
Geographers call the name given to a portion of Earths surface a toponym
(literally, place-name).
Site
The second way the geographers describe the location of a place is by its site,
which is the physical characteristics of a place.
Situation
Situation is the location of a place relative to other places. Situation us a good way
to indicate location for 2 reasons: finding an unfamiliar place and understanding its
importance.
Mathematical Location
The location any place on Earths surface can be described precisely by meridians
and parallels 2 set of imaginary arcs drawn in a grid pattern on Earths surface.
Regions: Area of Unique Characteristics
The sense of place that humans possess may apply to a larger area of Earth than
to a specific point. An area of Earth defined by one or more distinctive
characteristics is a region.
A region derives its unified character through the cultural landscape, a combination
of cultural features such as language and religion, economic features such as
agriculture and industry, and physical features such as climate and vegetation.
Types of Region
Geographers identify 3 types of region:
retain their traditional cultural elements has led to political conflict and market
fragmentation in some regions.
***Command centers are in more developed countries
***Manufacturing centers are in less developed countries
***15 degrees longitude is a time zone
Space: Distribution features
Geographers think about the arrangement of people and activities found its space
and to try to understand why those people and activities are distributed across
space as they are.
Distribution
The arrangement of a feature in space is known as distribution. Geographers
identify 3 main properties of distribution across Earth:
