OVERVIEW

In this lesson, students will use a variety of skills in order to learn the significance of
the Battle at Gettysburg and the Gettysburg Address. The lesson will incorporate
several different activities in order to target multiple intelligences and entry points
including virtual reality, videos, reading primary sources, math and student to
student discussions. By the end of this lesson, students will understand why the
Battle at Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, and the main ideas Lincoln
expressed in his Gettysburg Address.

DO NOW (5 minutes)
Students will answer one or all of the questions:
If a score is 20 years, how many years is fourscore and seven
years?
If the year was 1863, what year was fourscore and seven years ago?
What do you think this is referring to?

GETTYSBURG IN NUMBERS (5 minutes)


Students will use the graph to answer one or all of the questions:
The Confederates had 70,100 men, and the Union army has 93,700
men what percentage of their soldiers died on each side?
Why do you think the Union had more soldiers than the Confederate
army?
What is considered a casualty?

BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG - VIDEO (5-10 minutes)


Introductory video on the battle for students.
Teacher can decide if the students need to answer the questions and how
many should be answered.
In order to increase discussion, students can then discuss their answers
with a partner if desired.
BATTLE AT GETTYSBURG MAP (2 min)
Review of the army locations during the battles
This will help students understand the lay of the land when visiting the
park
GETTYSBURG NATIONAL PARK - GOOGLE EXPEDITION (25-45 minutes)
Teacher will lead the students through a Google Expedition at the
Gettysburg National Park.
In addition to the questions on Google Expeditions, there are several other
questions on the slide for the teacher to ask the students.
Students will have to answer at least 5 questions during the tour and
complete the chart on their worksheet.
GETTYSBURG ADDRESS - PRIMARY DOCUMENT (5-10 minutes)
Have the students read the speech or read aloud to them.
Students will complete the questions on the right hand side of the page.
GETTYSBURG ADDRESS - VIDEO (5 minutes)
Brief overview and significance of the Gettysburg Address
This will help clarify questions for students and give them a better
understanding of the speech after they had read it.
THINK-PAIR-UNITE- PARTNER ACTIVITY (5-10 minutes)
Students will answer the 1st two questions independently and then share
their answers with a partner.
After the students have written their partners answer in the space
provided, together they will develop a claim that answers the question.

EXIT TICKET
WRITING ACTIVITY (15 minutes)
Students will write a paragraph using the claim they developed with their
partner and three pieces of evidence in order to answer the aim.

DIFFERENTIATION
This lesson targets several learning styles since it incorporates visuals, audio,
writing, math and kinesthetic opportunities.

There are also various entry points

throughout the lesson since the questions are leveled and target different skills.
