Exercise 7 Human Development: The Miracle of Life Background Guide Questions

This video will show what actually happens inside the human body – from the moment sperm cells set out to search for the egg until a baby is born. After this presentation, the students are expected to understand the arduous travails of sperm cells, the path of development of the zygote and the changes resulting to the birth of an infant.

Exercise 7

Human Development: The Miracle of

Life
Background
Where does life start? This seems to be a
controversial question that perplexes many
people. Some say that life starts the
moment an egg is fertilized by a sperm.
Others say it starts when a fetus is formed
while some think that life starts the moment
a baby is born. Indeed, life is a big mystery.
And, as the title of the video presentation
states, life is a miracle.
The likelihood of an egg being fertilized
by a sperm is indeed small and among the
millions of sperm cells, only one gets to
penetrate the steady barrier of the ovum.
Once this happens, the egg shuts itself off to
other sperm cells and the mystery begins.
Simply put, the zygote divides, travels,
implants itself onto the wall of the uterus
and continues to develop. Numerous genes
are expressed, differentiation occurs and
development ensues. And before nine
months is over, a baby is introduced to the
world.
