'Chocolate' The 1975 Analysis
'Chocolate' The 1975 Analysis
Analysis
This initial shot starts with the focus being
on this metal pipe in the foreground. The
shot tracks inwards following the view
path that the pipe leads our eyeline to.
Within this, a focus pull takes place to
transform the focus points towards the
singer. He is alone in this first shot we see
of him, promoting his dominance and
signifies that he is the frontman on the
band. The fact that he is place in the
background under highly contrasted
chiaroscuro lighting creates an instant
sense of enigma. The fact that he is
wearing a leather biker jacket and dark
trousers connotes an aggressive star
persona often prominent in the rock
music scene. This symbolic use of mise-enscene is contradicted however, by the
music genre and the stance of the singer.
He is stood with his head down and his
hands in his pockets - opposing an in
your face character and presenting
himself as more reserved.

Analysis
This shot is a head on wide shot that has
prominent central composition and focus
of a vintage-looking car. This shot type is
visually intimidating as it emerges the
audience in a vulnerable position. The
band members are looking over their
shoulder in this shot, and this, alongside
the focus of the car in the shot symbolizes
that the men are driving away from
something, and are perhaps being
chased. The dark lighting cast by the time
of day adds to the suspense of a
potential chase, as the nighttime
naturally connotes danger.

Analysis
The lighting in this shot casts various
shadows over the lead singers face,
covering his eyes and hollowing his
cheeks. This mise-en-scne mimics the
look of a skull and thus, has sinister
connotations and emphasizes the stars
ambiguity - arguably representing him as
an outcast. The smoke in the background
adds to the enigma coding and also is
symbolic of rebellion and subverting from
healthy morals. This is a popular feature
within star personas in the pop industry,
as the bad-boy image sells within the
younger demographic. The camerawork
is a close up shot - emphasizing the
singers dominance within the band.

Analysis
The rain in this shot is connotes a gloomy
atmosphere and judging by the stars
somber expressions, hints at pathetic
fallacy. The composition of this shot
exhibits the lead singer in the foreground
with another band member behind him.
This shows the status of the frontman
whilst signifying a relationship within the
band through this two shot.

Analysis
This shot is subtle in symbolism, but the
slight glint of the cross necklace amongst
the shadows of bare torsos engaged in
intimacy connotes a contradictory
message. The physical intimacy is shown
alongside a signifier of purity and
innocence, this creates mixed messages
for the viewer and makes the lead singers
identity even more ambiguous. This clear
violation of Christian beliefs signifies a
careless and reckless star persona.

Analysis
This shot reiterates the Male Gaze theory
as the girl is naked as appealing to the
perspective of the heterosexual male.
Dark tones and shadows are cast across
one side of the girls face which makes
her appear more mysterious and
arguably more seductive as she has a
secretive sense about her. Her direct eye
contact with the camera in intimate and
synthetic personalization is used to
maximize sexual appeal and connection
with the viewer.

Analysis
This shot is an arc shot circling around the
band members standing back to back.
This camera movement captures each
band member to signify community of
the band. There is a significant light
source in the right hand corner that casts
shadows and captures the stars as
silhouettes, remaining cohesive with he
rest of the ambiguous video.

Analysis
This shot exhibits a silhouette outline of the
main singer. This incorporates Barthes
Hermeneutic Code which creates a
tense and enigmatic atmosphere. This
hooks viewers on the the video as
information about the main singer is
being withheld and they have the desire
to learn more about him and the rest of
the band.

Analysis
This shot is of a band member wearing
boxing gloves and punching a
punchbag. The mise-en-scne of this
instantly connotes violence and
masculinity - an unconventional theme of
the indie-pop genre. However, the black
and white theming and the dark shadows
cast are complimentary to this brutal
theme and match to create a tense
atmosphere.

Analysis
This is the final shot within the video, and
the only one to use colour. This is effective
as the lack of colour throughout contrasts
the bright orange tones in this shot and
makes them appear more prominent and
vibrant. The quotation across the screen
is; poetry is in the streets in full living
colour. This quotation links back to the
colour (or lack of) within the video and
suggests that it links to the emotional
message within the bands surroundings.
The shot of the car driving away into the
distance makes the narrative element
come full circle as it is the same cards we
saw in the first few shots - and concludes
their journey enigmatically.
