The Sun is the largest object in the solar system, accounting for 99.86% of its total mass. It is a spherical ball of hot plasma at the center of the solar system that generates energy through internal convection and magnetic fields. While medium-sized as a star, the Sun will expand over its lifetime first into a red giant engulfing Mercury and Venus, before shrinking into a white dwarf around the size of Earth.

Characteristics of the Sun
The Sun is the star at the centre of the Solar System and is the most important source of energy for life on Earth. It is a spherical ball of hot plasma, with internal convective motion that generates a magnetic field through a dynamo process. The size of the Sun The Sun is the largest object in the Solar System, and it accounts for 99.86% of the mass. In terms of stars, the Sun is actually a medium-sized star. Stars with much more mass can be much larger than the Sun. The size of the Sun is changing. In the future, when usable hydrogen fuel in the core has run out, it will become a red giant. It will engulf the orbits of Mercury and Venus, and possibly even the orbit of the Earth. The Sun will then be about 200 times bigger than its current size for a few million years. After the process of the Sun becoming a red giant, it will eventually shrink down to become a white dwarf star. Then the size of the Sun is estimated to be roughly the size of the Earth.
