Then deciding what to teach based on observations of the student working. What you might do or ask

Decide

Make a decision about what/how

to teach the student in the
conference. You might decide that
you will need more information
and cannot teach something
yet.

Teach

Observe the student at

his/her seat working with a
text or listen in during a turn
and talk during a lesson.
Ask the student some
questions about his/her
work.
Ask the student to explain
what she/he is doing to you
Ask the student to go back
to a part of the work and
explain his/her thinking
Closely observe the student
working in front of you
Consider what you are
seeing, hearing and have
seen and heard in the past
with this student
Consider what you could
teach through this
conference that would help
the individual student today
and everyday

Tell the student what you

noticed about him or her
Teach the student something
Model or describe an aspect
specific to try out that day or in
of your own/skilled work for
the very near future
the student to try out
Provide an example of what
to try
Have the student practice
what you are modeling in
front of you and offer
feedback
Ask the student to tell you
what he or she learned
about him or herself or
about the work
