This document presents a project to develop a guidance system for blind people using voice commands over a network. The system uses ultrasonic sensors, RFID tags, and a USB audio player integrated into a portable blind stick to provide turn-by-turn navigation instructions to blind users navigating a college campus. The future applications of the system could include using metal instead of plastic for the stick, expanding it to cover an entire building or outdoor sites, and improving obstacle detection. The project aims to help visually impaired individuals travel independently to their desired destinations through audio guidance cues.

1. Introduction
In this project the work has been done keeping in mind the easily available facility for the blind
especially for the students .As there are students who wish to have a system that can guide them
to their desired destination in the college campus. Here the location has been taken covering the
entire Electronics & Communication Engineering faculty and class room.
Human way finding consists of two distinct components: sensing of the immediate
environment for impediments to travel (e.g., obstacles and hazards) and navigating to remote
destinations beyond the immediately perceptible environment. Navigation, in turn, involves
updating ones position and orientation during travel with respect to the intended route or desired
destination and, in the event of becoming lost, reorienting and reestablishing travel toward the
destination.
Our project contributes to the evolution of technology convergence by improving
different aspects of the guiding system to make seamless guidance a reality. Through this work,
we want to show that the complexities imposed by these new environments can be properly
handled.

2. Motivation:
The World Health Organization estimates there are about 314 million vision impaired people in
the world, of which about 45 million are blind. The leading causes of blindness are cataract,
uncorrected refractive errors, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Many people who are
seriously vision impaired use a white cane and/or a guide dog to avoid obstacles. Recent years
have seen the development of several technologies designed to assist vision impaired people,
both for obstacle avoidance, and to travel to specific locations, or way finding.
Spatial information is often presented in the form of maps that viewers actively explore
to learn about an area. People who cannot see cannot share the benefits of such a visual
representation, and have traditionally relied on audio descriptions, tactile maps, guidance from
others, and even trial and error when learning the layout of a region. On-going assistive
technology research has yielded a number of promising techniques to help people who have
visual impairments plan daily walks and get directions, but little has been done to promote the
same kind of spatial awareness provided by visual maps. The BAGS project focuses on the latter
area of research by helping people without sight access and explores spatial information.

3. Problem Identification & Solving Steps:

In this system, a blind stick is incorporated with the ultrasonic sensor and the RFID reader .This
arrangement is handy as well as portable. It has been made for a specific location. In this project
a particular floor of the college campus has been considered. Thus the working can be explained
properly by means of the following block diagram:

Fig.1 Proposed model of project w.r.t. campus

Thus the working can be enumerated in the following points:
1. Initially the person is standing in front of the DSP and CAD lab with the blind stick and the
headphone.
2. Now when he will press the powe r on button then the system will start working.
3. When he will come in front of the teachers cabin, then the 1st TAG placed there will allow the
USB reader to play the voice: This is teachers cabin and in front you have HODs cabin.
4. When he will move in front then the 2nd TAG placed there will play the voice: This is Hods
cabin. In order to move to the EC final year section, move forward.
5. As soon as the person will reach the EC final year class then USB player will play the voice
with the help of 3rd TAG placed there: This is EC final year class.
Hence in this way the blind person can guided to the desired destination by means of the audio
instructions.

4. Application and Future Aspects :

The future aspects of this project are quite good. This project is aimed to help the visually
impaired persons and it will help them in reaching their final destination easily. One of its
advantages is that it is not too expensive and is easily affordable. There are a number of
possibilities of further modification and improvisation in future such as;

The system helps in detecting the obstacles by means of ultrasonic sensors incorporated
in the plastic stick. This plastic stick can be replaced by metal.

Moreover there is a prerecorded voice which gives audio instructions to the person by
means of a USB reader.

RFID reader is also placed on the stick which senses the RFID tags and at each tag the
audio instruction gets changed. Thus desired location can be easily reached by him.

This is a sample. Depending upon the following criterion a product can be manufactured
covering the entire building.

Not only for the buildings but it can also be explored to the outdoor sites.

5. Role and Responsibility:

Develop a project plan and manage deliverables according to the plan.

Determine the methodology used on the project.

Establish a project schedule and assign tasks to each project team members.

Provide regular updates to project guide and documenting the process.

I making sure that the project meets the standards set out by the project guide (often as a
rubric), plus any extras stipulated by the group members.
