Tutorial- Drilling -Turning

1. Calculate the rpm required to turn a 45 mm diameter piece of machine steel (CS 40 m/min).
2. A mild steel rod having 50 mm diameter and 500 mm length is to be turned on a lathe.
Determine the machining time to reduce the rod to 45 mm in one pass when cutting speed is 30
m/min and a feed of 0.7 mm/rev is used.
3. A 150 mm long 12 mm diameter stainless steel rod is to be reduced in diameter to 10 mm by
turning on a lathe in one pass. The spindle rotates at 500 rpm, and the tool is traveling at an axial
speed of 200 mm/min. Calculate the cutting speed, material removal rate and the time required
for machining the steel rod.
4. Calculate the time required to machine a workpiece 170 mm long, 60 mm diameter to 165 mm
long 50 mm diameter. The workpiece rotates at 440 rpm, feed is 0.3 mm/rev and maximum depth
of cut is 2 mm. Assume total approach and overtravel distance as 5 mm for turning operation.
5. A workpiece of 35mm diameter is to be turned on a lathe at 200 rpm. Calculate the cutting
speed.
6. Calculate the cutting speed of 32mm diameter piece od teel revolving at 500 rpm.
7. A drilling operation is taking place at 20 m/min cutting speed. If the diameter of the drill is
22mm, find the rpm of the drill.
8. Calculate the time taken to drill a hole through a plate of 55mm thick, using a 12 mm drill at a
cutting speed of 20 m/min, the feed being 0.05 mm/revolution.
9. A drill having a diameter of 30mm is working at a cutting speed of 35 m/min and a feed of
0.3mm/revolution. Find the feed rate in mm/min.
10. Three holes of diameter 15mm are to be drilled on 15mm thick plate if the cutting speed is 30
m/min. Calculate the time required to complete 12 such pieces. (Assume feed = 0.12
mm/revolution)
Answers
5. Cutting speed = 22 m/min
6. Cutting speed = 50.29 m/min
7. rpm = 289.3
8. 2 mins 4s
9. rpm of spindle = 371.4
Feed in mm/min = Feed in mm/rev x N
= 111.36 mm/min

10. No. of holes required to be drilled = 36

Time required = 7 mins 4s
