Elementary Physical Education Class Observation Report

1. Name of school district: Torrance Unified School District
Name of school: Victory Elementary School
Grade level: 4th grade
Name of teacher: Mrs. Graves
Classroom teacher or PE specialist? Classroom teacher
Date & time you observed: April 13, 2015 at 1:00pm
2. Describe class: how many students, if there are ELL learners (how many?), number of boys/girls, how
the students are dressed (shoes for PE?), how teacher is dressed for PE, etc.
There were 18 students in the class total; 11 girls and 7 boys. There was one boy who was an
ELL learner. Most of the class was wearing long sleeve shirts with jeans. A couple of the girls
were wearing sweatpants too. They all had sneakers on. One little girl actually had leggings on
underneath a jean skirt. I was surprised since most kids run around and climb things at lunch
time and she wasnt properly dressed. The teacher was wearing jeans and a plain, long sleeve
shirt with sneakers.
3. Describe environment: where PE takes place and what the area is like, any safety issues, equipment
used, how much equipment per student, weather, etc.
The class was taken outside to the playground. There is a huge, grass area by the basketball
courts where the teacher told them to spread out. It was so warm outside that the kids had to roll
up their sleeves. The teacher used two soccer balls for the kids to practice kicking. She split the
class in half and had each half kick the ball around in the grass.
4. Describe what happened in the lesson: beginning, how students are organized, classroom management,
how the lesson ended, everything that happened from start to finish of the lesson, length of lesson, etc.
In the beginning, the teacher told them to spread out for warm ups. She had them stretch by
touching their toes, reaching to the sky; arm circles, and lay on their stomachs and arching their
backs. She also had the class do partner crunches, where one partner held the feet and the other
did the crunches; then vice versa. She partnered them up by telling them to go toe to toe with a
neighbor. After that, she had them line up on one side of the basketball court. She gave them
different exercises to do from one end to the other. They had to do high knees, running back and
forth, skipping, and hopping on each foot. She had the boys go first, then the girls. After that, she
had the class count off 1-2. She had the ones got to one side and twos on the other. Each group
got a ball and kicked it to each other in a circle. They did this for about 3-5 minutes. She ended
the lesson with them spreading out again and having a short cool down. She had them reach up
and then down. She repeated this about 4 times. The whole lesson lasted for about 20 minutes.

She had control of the class throughout the lesson by using a whistle to get their attention. It was
very effective.
5. Were students enjoying the lesson, were they waiting around a lot for turns, were any left out, was
there instruction given, etc.?
The students seemed to be enjoying the lesson, especially kicking around the soccer ball. They
were smiling and laughing, especially when someone kicked it out of the circle and had to run to
go get it. They were supportive of each other if someone missed who they were kicking the ball
to. One student patted his friend on the back after he kicked it too hard. They were always active
in the lesson and werent ever standing around waiting for a turn. The teacher gave clear
instructions of what she was asking from the class.
6. Your favorite part of the lesson, least favorite; based on your experience (limited or otherwise) what
worked well, what didnt; etc.?
My favorite part of the lesson was seeing the students kicking the ball and interacting with each
other. I liked that all students were participating in the lesson. I also liked how the teacher
divided the class and put them into partners. I feel like her way was very effective. I also find it a
better way to have the students partner themselves up. The students like to feel like they have
some control and choose their own partners. They enjoy the activity more. I dont think there
was anything that didnt work. I think all the exercises were effective and the lesson ran
smoothly.
7. What did you learn from observing this lesson?
I learned that something like a whistle or a loud clap grabs the students attention suddenly is the
most effective way to get them to listen. I also learned that there should be a target area for the PE
lesson, like focusing on legs or arms for one lesson. This helps them to know which exercises work
which muscles. Overall, I feel like this was a great learning experience for when I am a teacher in my
own classroom.
