prior to the two-week intensive).
Planning Questions:
How do you write a typical lesson plan?
Ms. H has her day organized in a printed out week by week lesson plan that
includes the day of the week, the subject, and the covered materials.
What types of materials do you need available when you plan lessons?
A Smart board, and student laptops.
In what ways do you plan to accommodate individual differences in the
classroom?
Ms. H has three students who are visually impaired. One of these students is blind
and has to have his lesson finished 2 weeks in advance so that his work can be
converted to brail ahead of time. Special seating, and enhanced bolded text
accommodate the other students who are visually impaired. There is a student who
has un-readable handwriting, so he completes all of his written work on his laptop.
Students who are struggling with math instruction use manipulatives.
Instructional Questions:
What are some of your instructional challenges as a teacher?
Having things for her brail student prepared two weeks in advance and
preparing for her other students with impairments.
What have been some of your instructional successes as a teacher?
Student growth- Seeing students grasp a concept that they have been
struggling with.
What do you consider essential characteristics for successful teaching?
Being organized, and being a quick thinker.
How often do your students receive social studies/science instruction?
Students receive a science lesson daily. Students receive a social studies
lesson 2-3 times a week.
Classroom Management Questions:
What motivation tactics do you use to ensure a desire to learn?
Having interesting innovated lessons, lots of projects and experiments.
Tell me about the classroom community. What are the class rules? How is
student behavior monitored? In what ways is positive behavior reinforced?
In what ways are negative behaviors prevented? Tell me about the
consequences for negative behavior.
Class rules: Ms. H has a classroom promise board hanging in her classroom
which includes the following: #HaveFun #Listen #BeYourself #Collaborate
#WorkHard #Ask?s
Ms. H also mentions that her class motto is that they are the example for
the rest if the school. They are going to lead the school.
How is student behavior monitored: Students are monitored by a quarterly
behavior card. Ms. H also uses a program called Dojo, which is used online.
When students reach 20 pts on dojo they are allowed to change their

character. Brownie rewards are given to the class as a whole. Once the entire
class fills up their brownie board, they will receive a reward.
Negative Behavior: If students show negative behavior they will score a letter
below on their Behavior Card. Students may also receive a think sheet, which
has to be filled out and signed by a parent. If you have a letter below on your
behavior card you will have silent lunch.
Tell me about the pacing of lessons and interaction in the classroom- use of
time- and other aspects of timewait time, and time using teacher talk and
student talk. What works well with your students?
Ms. H has a schedule of her rotation throughout lessons for example:
10:35 10:55 mini lesson
2-17 minute rotations 10:55-11:12
My own question: When do you plan all of your lessons?
I already have my lessons from previous years so I keep using them, but I have to
adapt them based on my class as well. Since I have a blind student, I have to have
these lessons prepared and ready 2 weeks in advance so It can be brailed.
