Introduction to communication skills

Basic process of communication
As human beings we receive information in different environments
and therefore this creates the need to learn communication skill
As such communication is a learned skill that involves aspects;
speaking, listening, reading and ability to understand verbal and non verbal,
meaning we develop in different ways.
Communication skills may be learned by observing from other
people and modeling our behaviors based on which we speak, we see, we
hear, or may be learned directly through education i.e. schools and by
practicing these skills and having them evaluated.

Definition of communication
Its a successful transmission of information through a common
system of symbols, signs, behaviors, speech, writing or signals between two
or more people.
It can also be defined as exchange of ideas, opinions between
persons, and groups through verbal and non verbal means:
Technical definition
Process definition
Transaction definition
Scientific definition
Strategic definition
The above definitions have to be researched about.

Importance of communication

To conduct business
To exchange ideas
To pass information to other people
For decision making purposes
To maintain and establish relationships

TYPES OF COMMUNICATION
Verbal communication: Its the communication that involves the use
of spoken words.
Non verbal communication: Involves the use of signs, drums etc this
form of communication calls for proper understanding of peoples
cultures because gestures or symbols may make communication a
different thing in each culture.

COMMUNICATION SETTINGS
Intrapersonal communication: Its the communication within one
person or an individual.
Interpersonal communication: Its communication that takes place
between a small group and number of people between 3 or 15.
Public communication: Its similar to large group except that people
are always gathered in one place.
Mass communication: communication to a dispersed place and
always mediated e.g. internet, television, radio.
Large group communication: Its communication between 15 or 60
people or slightly above.
