American Government Basics: Congress
House of Representatives:
Representatives serve the
people of a specific
congressional district within
their state
Made up of 435 representatives,
elected from the 50 states
Public elections held every 2 years
Number of representatives from a
certain state depends on population

Senate:
Senators balance the needs of their
whole state with federal needs
Each state is represented by two senators,
who hold office for 6 years
Elections for 1/3 of the seats every 2 years
Number of senators remains at 2 despite the
population
