Common Core Standards and Lesson Plans
Standards K-2nd grade:
Standard: K.CC.3
Activity: For this activity I can start by splitting the
children into different groups and give them each a set
of papers that have caterpillars on them. I will give
each student little puff balls and they have to count the
cotton balls to a certain number ranging from 0-20 to
create the caterpillar that the sheet says. Each card
they will increase the number of cotton balls on the
caterpillar. I will walk around and assist the children as
they need. I could follow this activity by having the
children count to 20 on a piece of paper or have them
say it allowed as a class.

Standard: Base Ten 2.NBT.2

Activity: This would be the perfect opportunity to use a


base 10 hundreds graph and really get the children
thinking about skip counting. I would give each table a
different hundreds board and assign them a different
skip count. One table could have 5s, one could have
10s, one could have 100s and one could have 1000s.
That would also depend on how many tables there are. I
would have each table count on their hundreds board
that I gave them as a group. Then once all the groups
are done, I could bring the class together and over the
class projector, I could have each group share what
they came up with. I will fill in the hundreds board all at

once in different colors and show the students how they


all relate and how they overlap each other.
Source: I got this inspiration from a class activity that
we did. I believe that this would be a great way for
students to learn skip counting.
Standards from 3rd-5th grade:
Standard Operations and Algebraic Thinking 3.OA.8
Activity: For this lesson plan I would do a group oral
activity then have them split off by themselves and do
a worksheet. I would do three problems with the
children on the board. All of them would be similar to
this problem that I have created.
o There are 22 children on a school bus. If 3 more
children get on and then 5 exit. After they exit the
number of children double. How many children are
there left on the school bus?
o All of the problems that I use for the group activity
will be similar to this problem. Once I feel the
students have a good grasp on what they are
doing, I will have each of them complete and
handout and turn in for grading.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking 5.OA.1

Activity: I feel like this activity would be best if we did


things as a class or in groups. This activity would a
great activity to bring out class white boards and each
child have a white board. I could then write down a
problem of the projector and have the students hold up
their white board when they think they have the
answer. This way the children dont feel pressured if
they dont know the answer and they can come up with
it on their own time.

o Some of the problems I could use would be the


following:
3 + 1 + (4 X 2) =
6 X 2 + (6 + 3) 2 =
(5 -4) + 3 X 9 =
o After the children complete these problems and I
may do more depending on if they are getting it. I
would have them do a worksheet to see if they are
grasping the concept.
Standards from 6th-8th grade:
Standard Expressions and Equations 6.EE.3
Activity: For this activity I would handout a worksheet
to the children. I would then show them how it works
and what they are suppose to do. The worksheet will
start out with basic problems and then get harder as it
goes on. The worksheet will have several questions like
the following:
o x+x+x=
o 3y + y =
o ____ + 2y = 7y
o 5 (2 + x) =
o __ (7y + 4) = 56y + 32
o 28x + x =
After they are all done, I will have the kids volunteer to
come up to the white board and put their answers and
have them explain how they got the answer.
Standard Expressions and Equations 8.EE.1

Activity: This lesson would be good for teaching


scientific notation as well. You can kill two birds with
one stone in this lesson plan. For this lesson I would
have my students split into groups and come up with
scientific notation problems. Once each group had
about 4 or 5 problems they will rotate their papers and

they will do a different groups problem. After they all


rotate and have done everyones group work, I will do
some board instruction with them and do another
activity on the board and have them figure the
problems out on their own and have them turn in the
group work and the worksheet.
