Homework1 Due Sept 15

This document contains an assignment for an advanced vibrations course. It includes four problems involving calculating the natural frequencies and modes of multi-degree of freedom vibrating systems, including: 1) two rigid bars connected by torsional springs, 2) three bars suspended from the ceiling and interconnected by springs, 3) a four-floor building model with different mass floors, and 4) a three-story building model with different mass floors connected by springs.

ME 729 Advanced Vibrations

Fall 2016
Assignment 1

Due: 15 September 2016

1. Two rigid bars have length L and mass m. The torsional springs have stiffness mgL
( is non-dimensional), and the springs are undeformed when the bars are vertical.
Find: (1) The natural frequencies and modes of free vibration when =4.
(2) The natural frequencies when =2. Explain the significance of the result.

2. Three identical bars having mass m are suspended from the ceiling and interconnected
by a pair of identical springs. The unstretched length of each spring equals the spacing
between the bars when they are vertical. The spring constant = /, where is a
nondimensional constant. Generalized coordinates are the counterclockwise rotation of
each bar.
(1) Find the natural frequencies of this system and the modes.
(2) Normalize the modes with respect to the mass matrix and verify the orthogonality
properties
Consider = 2.

3. The sketch depicts a model of a four-floor building, in which the columns are treated
as massless beams and the floors are treated as rigid slabs whose masses are 1 =
50,000 , 2 = 50,000 , 3 = 40,000 4 = 35,000 . A static
horizontal force of 5 is applied successively to each floor. The following table lists
the measurements of the static horizontal displacements produced by each application of
the force. Entries marked as X denote measurements that were not made. Determine the
natural frequencies and modes of the system.

4. The system shown represents a scaled model of a three-story building. The masses for
the model are 1 = 100 , 2 = 200 and 3 = 300 . The springs are selected

such that = 2 , where = 40, 50 and 60 . Find the natural frequencies and
mode shapes of the system.
