Lesson Plan for 11/17/2015

Introduction to Marching Band Techniques

James Madison University
Emma Guy
Objectives: To have students understand the basics that are necessary in the
drill-writing process through the use of the website micromarching.com. The
class should be able to effectively use the website to communicate original
ideas for the visuals of a marching show. Students will also gain an
understanding of the essential forms and shapes that are most commonly
used in marching shows and be able to create a simple 15 set opener on the
website. Even if the students do not plan on writing their future bands drill,
this lesson will help them to understand the basic process that their drill
writer must go through and give them a simple software through which they
can communicate their vague ideas to their drill writers.
Procedures/Activities:
o Teacher will lecture on the idea of drill writing and introduce students
to the software that is typically used (Pyware, Drillbook Next, etc.)
o Teacher will use youtube.com to show video examples of shows that
use clear shapes and interesting ideas for the opener they will design
for homework
o The students will then be walked through the process to create an
account on micromarching.com
o Teacher will explain the website and how to share a show and judge a
show
o Teacher will play an example of the type of opener he/she wishes the
class to create for an assignment
o Students will watch tutorial videos on the website and ask the teacher
any additional questions they may have
o Students are then required to design the first 3 sets of their opener
assignment before the end of the class period to exhibit their
understanding of how the website works
o Students will show their work to the teacher, who will provide
feedback that will help them complete their individual assignment

Assessment:
o Students will be required to create the first 3 sets of their show opener
assignment to show to the teacher before the end of the class period to
demonstrate that they understand the website and how to use the
keyboard shortcuts to aid them in creating their show.
o Teacher will make sure the students shows include:
No drill crossovers (people running into each other)
Consciousness of space (especially for guard)
No insanely large moves (i.e. moving from one 20-yard line to
the opposing 20-yard line)
o Assessment will be graded based on general understanding of
software and completion
0 complete sets= 0 points
1 complete set= 1 point
2 complete sets= 2 points
3 complete sets= 3 points
