ChE514L Plate and Frame Filter Press

This document describes a laboratory experiment using a plate and frame filter press to filter a calcium carbonate suspension. The objectives are to study the effect of varying the inlet pressure on filtration time. The equipment includes a plate and frame filter press apparatus, filter cloths, containers, and a calcium carbonate suspension. Safety precautions are outlined. The procedures describe setting up and calibrating the apparatus, preparing the suspension and filter plates, conducting trials at different inlet pressures, and collecting filtration time data. Results will be analyzed to understand the relationship between inlet pressure and filtration time.

Make sure that the filter layers and plates are inserted in the correct manner and order.
When keeping the suspension homogenous, avoid stirring near the pump.
Avoid working in a wet area. Always mop the floor.

Place the experimentation stand on a flat surface and secure against rolling
Set the master switch to the 0/Off position
Connect the apparatus to the main electricity supply
Fill the suspension tank with approximately 150 L of water (the liquid level should be
around 20 mm above the immersion pump)
Fully open the stop valve on the bypass
Close the diaphragm valve at the filter infeed
Switch on the unit at the master switch
Switch on the pump
Weigh out approximately 1 kg of calcium carbonate and add to the suspension tank

Note: During all experiments, always continue agitating the suspension in the suspension
tank until it has been used up.

o

Place the experimentation stand on a flat surface and secure against rolling
Connect a hose to the drain fittings on the colleting tray below the filter plates and attach
it in such a way that any leaked suspension is fed back into the suspension tank. Open
the stop valve.
Close the stop valve at the measuring tank outlet
Create the suspension
Prepare the plate and frame filter press

Note: While preparing the plate and frame filter press to perform the experiment, the
suspension can be conveyed in a circuit to keep the solid particles in a state of suspension in
the liquid. Check filter layers for damage before inserting then place the filter layers and
plates onto the guide bars in turn.
7.2. Experimental Procedure
Effect of varying the inlet pressure

o
o
o

Slightly open the stop valve on the bypass

Set the filter inlet pressure to 0.2 bar by adjusting the diaphragm valve at the filter infeed
pipe
Measure the time it takes for the filtrate to accumulate from to 50 L with 2 L increments
(The filtrate tank can only collect 20 L of filtrate. Once the tank is full, close the diaphragm
valve and drain the tank and continue with the experiment)
Repeat above procedure with different filter inlet pressures

7.3. Shutdown
o

o
o

Release the filter plates and filter layers and move them apart using the spindle
Switch off the pump
Drain all water and suspension residue from the unit
Rinse off filter cake from the filter layers and filter plates in the suspension tank.
