OPENING

SEQUENCE
ANALYSIS
The Imitation Game (2014)

Introduction

The thriller film that I will be analyzing the opening sequence is

The Imitation Game, directed by Morten Tyldum and released in
2014. The film is based on a true story about a man called Alan
Turing, during World war 2 he was hired to crack the enigma code
to help great Britain win the war. He gains help from fellow
mathematicians and decides to build a machine that will try to
break the codes from the Germans.
The Target audience is mainly going to be adults over 20+ or even
teenagers because its a film with not many action but a lot of
knowledge and surprises instead. I think that people who have an
interest in computers, machines and codes will likely be the target
audience because the plot is based on machines and codes.

How the narrative is

introduced/set up
Within the first 10 seconds of the movie the
audience can understand the narrative will be
based on a true story and take place in around
1951 in England.

For example you can see the text that says it is

based on a true story and also the year and place.
This is effective because it shows the audience it is
a true story because of the text. Also the year and
place is shown to the audience so the audience will
know the year in which it is set and have some
idea around that year. However it might not be the
main setting. This is because it can either be the
future or the past which gives the audience an
idea or glimpse of what is happening.
This supports the equilibrium of the narrative
because it gives the audience a starting point and
knowledge of the start.

How the characters are

introduced
Within the opening sequence the protagonist
is introduced as secretive and calm.
For example, this first look at the protagonist
he is inside a room with another person
walking inside. The audience does not know
what is happening and no talking was in the
clip giving it a secret to the audience. Also
the sound in this opening is very secretive
and mysterious giving the effect of mystery
to the audience.
This shows that the protagonist is calm and
collected but also may be mysterious. Also
the sound is used to create a mystery,
secretive effect and to draw in the audience

How the genre and themes are

established/communicated
The thriller genre is shown and expressed
momentarily within the opening sequence
through the scene and objects in the
sequence.
For example the police is investigating the
protagonist home because it was robbed with
lots of broken stuff and random things on the
walls. Also the sound is secretive and
mysterious.
This helps show the thriller genre because
something like robbery is already included and
the sound is very secretive and mysterious
and dark. Also the investigation scene shows
more mystery because the audience does not
know what really happened. The machine that
they found will draw the attention to the
audience because they dont know what it is
and will try to find out throughout the movie

How people/places/events
are represented.
Within the film the main protagonist and
other characters are represented by mise
en scene. The outfit that they were shows
who they are for example I can tell that the
policeman is a policeman because of his
outfit. Also facial expression is used by the
characters to communicate.
This helps create an idea of what the
character personality is and how to interact
with other people. Also the costumes help
represent what they do or who they are.

The camerawork also help represent the

setting. This is because for example the
used of a high angle shows all the props
and objects on the table giving the
audience a more field of view.
This shot shows that the setting is very
strange due the vast amount of chemicals
on the table and dirtiness.
This helps gives the audience a sense of
wanting to know more because of the
strange things that are in the setting and
what protagonist is or what he does.

Conclusion
In conclusion I have found out that the opening sequence is
used to gain the attention of the audience and try to lure
them more into the film. The use of mise en scene,
camerawork, sound and characters help this to ensure that
the audience is focused and intrigued to the film. It also
helps the opening sequence show the thriller genre,
expressing it with the different techniques and such. I also
found that having early character interactions help with the
traits and personality's of the characters because it shows
the audience what the characters are like. This all relates
and shows the importance of the opening sequence and the
basis of it. I will try to use these features in my production
such as the sound and camerawork at the start because it
attracts the audience greatly.
