Tutorial 2

This document contains 5 tutorial questions related to power flow analysis using the Newton-Raphson and Gauss-Seidel methods. Question 1 involves determining the initial mismatches and Jacobian elements for a 2-bus system. Question 2 involves defining bus types, calculating voltages using Gauss-Seidel, and explaining Newton-Raphson. Question 3 uses Newton-Raphson to solve a 3-bus system with different bus types. Question 4 applies Gauss-Seidel to a 2-bus system. Question 5 uses Newton-Raphson to iterate on a solution for another 2-bus system.

QUESTION 3

For a three bus power system assume bus 1 is the swing with a per unit
voltage of 1.0

0 , bus 2 is a PQ bus with a per unit load of 2.0 +

j0.5, and bus 3 is a PV bus with 1.0 per unit generation and a 1.0 voltage
setpoint. The per unit line impedances are j0.1 between buses 1 and 2,
j0.4 between buses 1 and 3, and j0.2 between buses 2 and 3. Using a flat
start, use the NewtonRaphson approach to determine the first iteration
phasor voltages at buses 2 and 3.

unit.

and perform two iterations.

b) Determine S1 and the real and reactive power loss in the line.

pu on a base of 100 MVA. Using Newton Raphson method, obtain the

voltage magnitude and phase angle of bus 2. Start with an initial estimate of
pu and 2=0 . Perform one iteration.
