2nd Grade News

November 10, 2016

Dear 2nd Grade Families,

The end of October kicked off our Holidays Around the
World Unit. The kiddos enjoyed using heir passports to travel
to India to learn about Diwali and Mexico for the Dia De Los
Muertos Celebration. Next up in our travels will be the
Cayman Islands, Thailand, and the Netherlands. Last week
we also got a chance to have our voice heard in the Every
Kid Votes Presidential Election.

For the past two weeks we have been learning all
about maps and landforms. Next week we will get to build
our own island and design a travel brochure, create laws and
economic plan for our island. Today your child will be going
home with a plastic bag and a recipe for the playdoh that will
be used for our islands. Please make the dough over the
weekend to bring in Monday and Tuesday of next week. I
strongly encourage you to have your child help with this. It
will give them great background knowledge for when we
learn about measurement.

November 22nd 2nd grade will be hosting a
Thanksgiving Program. Please join us in the auditorium from
1-2pm to see what weve all been working hard on.

I hope you have a wonderful 3 day weekend. If you
have any questions or concerns please dont hesitate to ask.

What Were Learning

This week in reading we have been talking about cause and effect and retelling important
events in a story that we read. We are working on identifying and capitalizing proper nouns
and writing contractions. We have also been learning about using commas to separate items in
a list. In writing, we have been writing friendly letters. This week we wrote thank you letters to
send to the veterans and the Durham VA Hospital thanking them for their service to our country.
In math we have been learning about solving word problems using the bar model and
practicing repeated addition. In social studies we have started learning about maps and globes.
In science weve been discussing what it means to be an inventor, the design process and will
begin our next STEM unit on Form and Function.
