Observation Task 4

This document provides guidance for Teaching Practice Task 4, which involves observing and developing classroom routines. It includes a table for describing 5 routines observed in a mentor teacher's classroom, including when and where each is used and its purpose. The document also includes a lesson plan template for developing a routine to be implemented during a teaching practice class. The template requires outlining the lesson objectives, activities, groupings, behaviors, and transitions, as well as assessing the routine's effectiveness.

Observation Task 4
Choose, justify and reflect on the selection of appropriate routines and explain practical aspects of their
implementation.

Reflect on how routines can impact classroom environment (pacing, preventive CRM,
student engagement)
Choose and justify the selection of appropriate routines (entering/leaving the class,
transitions, submitting work, resource distribution) in a range of contexts (ages, gender,
class size, school context, class dynamics, parental support)
Explain practical aspects of implementation (clear instructions consistency)

TASK DESCRIPTION
The task is made up of two activities:
Activity 1: Observing Classroom Routines and Procedures
Activity 2: Planning for/Developing Routines and
Procedures
You are to complete BOTH Activity 1 AND Activity 2.

Activity One: Observing Classroom Routines and Procedures

Though there are many routines and procedures all over the school such as returning from assembly or
walking in the hallways, this task focuses on what happens inside of your classroom only.
During the first week of your teaching practice observe your MST and her/his classroom. Make a note
of five (5) routines that you see her/him use every day inside of the classroom. Fill in the table below
to describe EACH routine; when and where it is used; and what is the aim of the routine or the student
behavior that it hopes to achieve.

After the Task - Reflection

Reflect on the routine of the classroom and how it is was effective with the students? Explain how this routine will affect student learning in
a KG class.

Teach children the routines are very important in the classroom because of it save the time, and it makes the teacher feel relax and
comfortable. So, you should for the teacher to teach the students routines and procedures carefully and in a simple way to make a student
love discipline. First, teaches the students how to do certain things in a simple way and use simple vocabulary. Second, the teacher should
explain to the student the routine exactly. I think the routines my MST used is effective in the classroom and the students follow the routines
especially when they make the line up to go to bus or bathroom or playground.

Activity Two: Planning for/Developing Routines and Procedures

Plan the routines for one of your classes. The activity expects that you will teach the class. It may be a class that you teach for
observation by your MST/MCT or just a practice class that you teach with the permission of your MST. The lesson can be
incorporated as one of your formal observations if your MST/MCT decides. To complete the activity, you are required (whether the
lesson is one of your formal observations or not) to fill in and submit the planning sheet below.
Before you begin to complete the table, talk a little bit about the class/lesson in which this plan for routines is to be used. Include:
Lesson objectives
Main activities in the lesson
Grouping of students during each main activity
Behaviour expected during each activity (e.g. sharing resources; changing stations; presenting)
Where are the transitions in the lesson? What are they: (e.g. moving from plenary to group work between main activity one and main
activity two)

Class/Year
Learning Objective of
the routine/procedure
(what it hopes to
achieve)

Teaching Practice Booklet

Routine
Let the student sit in a group and I
will sit with each group to teach
them the activity. And the other
group I let them play with cubes
until I finish.

Routine
After the student goes home, I
will put the student activities in
this place to display their work.

Routine
I will let them one day in a
week to use plastic scissors and
cut the paper.

Place in todays class

(when will you
perform the routine)

I will perform it in last semester.

Importance to the
smooth functioning of
todays class
How well did this
routine work in
todays class

Very important to gives each

student his chance.

I will make this routine every day

because it helps the student to
feel happy when they see their
work.
Important for students to
encourage them.

I will teach the students in

KG1 or KG2 to use plastic
scissors because its safe for
them.
Important to develop their
physical domains.

Its very fun and let the student to

see their work and know the
important of the activity. Also,
they will remember the what they
learned it yesterday.

I think the student feel

confident because they will
feel they are like an adult when
they use scissors.

Anecdotal Evidence
(e.g. pictures of your
class during the
routine; posters of
rules etc.)

Its work because each one needs to

learn.

If you had to teach

this class over, how
would you adjust this
routine and why

Teaching Practice Booklet

I will use when I teach because it

helps me to teach every one and
observe his if they understand the
lesson or not.

This routine important for KG1

and KG2. I will let each student
hurry up to finish their work
quickly to put it in this place.

I will give each child scissors

and let all student cut in a good
way. Also, I will teach them
how they can use this scissors.

After the Task - Reflection

Choose 3 best practices you observed during your time in school. Reflect on these and consider why you could implement these in a
UAE KG classroom in the future. Explain how these practices will affect student learning in a KG class.
I think its important to teach the student the routines for the first three weeks of the year. Because the child needs to advise them and
them important of discipline in the classroom. Also, I think routines make our life easier and save the time so the teacher can finish the
lesson quickly and she has time to give the extra student activity. Also, routines include: teach the student to say good morning in the
morning, and each student will respect each other or respect the teacher. Also, I want to teach the student transition to make my
classroom discipline. Also, I will include in my lesson plan a story and let this time fun for the student to engage them and let them
love the kindergarten. Also routine makes student predict what happen next, and it helps the student develop their thinking and
cognitive domains.
