Math Portfolio

Jonalyn R. Limon submitted a portfolio in general mathematics to their teacher Mrs. Julieta R. Alcantara. The portfolio contains an activity that asks which of three relations are functions. Relation J and L are functions as no ordered pairs have the same x-value with different y-values, while R is not a function as it contains the ordered pairs (1,2) and (1,9) with the same x-value. The relations can be represented by mapping diagrams with arrows from the domain to the range. Graphs (a), (b), (c) are graphs of functions as they pass the vertical line test, while graph (d) is not a function.

As a learner performing a task is a very good exercise for our brain. I suggest this topic
because it is easy to understand, now lets answer and explain the example activity.

Activity 1: Which of the following relations are functions?

(a)

J= {(2,4),(3,6),(5,9),(7,8)}

(c)

L= {(1,8),(2,6),(3,9),(4,7)}

(b)

R= {(1,2),(1,9),(2,5),(2,6),(3,7)}

Solutions:

The relations J and L are functions because no two ordered pairs have the same x- value
but different y- values, while R is not a function because (1,2) and (1,9) are ordered pairs
with the same x- value but different y-values.

Relations ad functions can be represented by mapping diagrams where the elements of the
domain are mapped to the elements of the range using arrow. Now lets match!

Solutions:

Graphs (a),(b),(c) are graphs of functions while (d) is not because it didnt passed the
vertical line test.
