Interview with the Early Explorers

So far in this unit we have been looking at some of the first Europeans to arrive in Canada
and the reasons behind their journeys. Now you will have the opportunity to take a more in
depth look at an explorer of your choice. Your task will be to create an assignment or
presentation that will allow the class to develop a greater understanding of your chosen
explorer, and what they contributed to Canada today.
The explorer you will be researching will be assigned in class. You may use your textbook
pg. 62-64 for research, as well at least one other source - The Canadian Encyclopedia would
be a good place to start. The questions your assignment MUST answer can be found below:
1. Background of the explorer:
o Where were they born?
o Which country paid for their voyage?
2. Reasons for exploring:
o What were they sent to Canada to find?
o What was in it for them?
3. Challenges or obstacles during the journey:
o Did they run out of food?
o Did they have problems with the First Nations?
o How did the Canadian winter impact them?
4. Accomplishments and impact on Canada today:
o What did they contribute to Canada?
Did they discover an important place?
Did they build a colony?
Did they find any significant resources?
You may work individually on this assignment, in partners, or groups of no more than three.
Your assignment can take any format you want, as long as it is approved by me first. Some
suggestions are:

A TV talk show style interview

A Facebook or Instagram account for the explorer
A Magazine type interview
A scrapbook or diary of the expedition
Any other format just run it by me first
