Link: During the 1950s, electroshock therapy was widely used to de-pattern

undesired behavior and reshape the personalities of patients with minor psychiatric
ailments. Author, Naomi Klein explains how neoliberal policies follows the same
concept and employs the same torture method.
1. Governments justify unfavorable neoliberal policies through fear-mongering
rhetoric and threat-construction. Similar to the electroshock torture
techniques used on psychiatric patients, neoliberal policies employ fear as
the guiding principle to reshape reality in and of itself.
2. Klein uses the term torture as a metaphor for the pervasiveness of
neoliberalism. Governments organize think-tanks, universities, schools, and
various segments of the media to redefine the very nature of life itself.
Wedded in the belief that the market should be the organizing principle for all
political, social, and economic decisions, neoliberalism wages an all-out war
on democracy, the welfare-state, public goods, and non-commodified values.
This enable prevailing market forces to constructs an artificial reality where
every human action and knowledge production is controlled by free market
fundamentalism. And those who resist the system are labelled as outcasts, as
terrorists and criminals, as uneducated and undeserving of our sympathy. Its

3. Impact and Root cause: Klein further explains how policies aimed at
maximizing market efficiency is the root cause of disaster. An economic
system that requires constant growth, while avoiding all serious attempts at
environmental regulation while extracting wealth from the poor, generates a
steady stream of military, ecological, and financial disasters all on its own.
4. Turn: Neoliberalism employs rhetoric of freedom, economic prosperity, and
better living standard as an illusion to disguise its genocidal, sacrificial
tendencies i.e. destroying all of humanity in the illusion of saving it.
5. Alt: Use this public debate space to critique power of existing neoliberal
structures. Historically, sites of education provided the spaces and conditions
for prioritizing civic values over commercial interests, for recognizing that
consumerism is not the only kind of citizenship, and for granting the purpose
and meaning of critical education in a democratic society. Especially since
higher education continues to be under attack by forces of corporatization,
we must take our stance to resist the government teams attempt to promote
neoliberal agendas in this academic space.
